Blender Developers Meeting Notes

code2.49... done. Next action item: 2.5!

2.5 progress
Hi all,

With 2.49b out, and the Google projects wrapped up, we spent most of the time on the 2.5 topic.

  • Proposal: move over 2.5 branch to trunk next sunday, Martin coordinates it.
  • Benoit wants to merge his new IK controller work, wil be done in close cooperation with Martin to ensure things go fine.
  • Blender GE player has stub now... to map bad level calls in Blender kernel and RNA especially. Urgent note to not think this is a good solution... at least the stub code is in the player now, and not in Blender itself!
  • Roadmap proposal... Ton still tries to get the big picture, to make a roadmap for the 2.5x series. All devs are invited to make sure they communicate their own roadmaps to this list and/or in wiki a.s.a.p.
  • There will be a 2.5x bug tracker back within a few days. The team will maintain a clear todo list in the wiki, with a good overview of the features you cannot report on yet, or issues that are on the list to fix already.
  • Nathan is continuing with his Redmine experiment: an alternative system for tracking svn commits and bug reports.
  • Sofar it looks promising, he'll report back to us with a final proposal later.
  • Sound: in order to sync Blender playback with playing sound a different clock-timer approach has to be coded... Ton will coordinate with Peter and Joerg.
  • We have to check best way of adding Open Collada lib in Blender. The library itself seems to be as large as Blender itself now. Adds about 10 MB to download size... Resulting Blender will be 10-12MB in size.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Thanks for the steady flow of updates. I'm love that you're trying to keep everyone in the loop about everything leading up to 2.5 and Durian. It's keeping us excited about what's to come for Blender. Cheers

  2. integrate Bmesh please. I think the majority of the blender users would appreciate if that was possible, even if just the dissolve and clean subdivisions.

  3. ADD THE 10MB!!! Collada support is worth it! :)

But seriously, for those with slower internet connections perhaps a separate patch adding collada support would be fairer.

    EDIT:
Sorry!! Forgot to add, WELL DONE!!! you guys work so hard for all of us!

  4. @an ancient egg, integration of Bmesh will not and should not happen if many other tools aren't working yet with it. It's not that Bmesh itself needs to be fully functional, but it's the rest of Blender

  5. ah...OK then. So, does that mean that until 2.5 is completely coded, Bmesh can't be safely integrated? it's just that the dissolve and clean subdivision would be amazing and great assets to the program.

  6. @Nathan: Thank Lucifer's gumdrops! I thought that blender was going to shoot up to 20MB or something!

The new sound sync work is exciting too.

I've been making some lovely sky-boxes with blender2.5 at the moment. It's extremely easy now with volumetrics and atmosphere rendering. Hint: make hollow sphere, shrink vertically and use as volume with camera inside it.

    Please do include collada support.
    Don't create a seperate package.
Collada is a really strong feature to have.
Many products support or intend to support or are coding to support collada. It's time to replace the old 3ds format with something better.

  8. Collada is much sought after for studios who don't want to be locked into the FBX format, please do keep it in. I'm sure the world can handle another couple of mb on it's smallest full cg studio app! :D

  9. Keep collada in 12 mb isnt big I used to download that allot of times on my 14k4 telephone modem so its no problem for slow connections either. What you could do is chop the file up in rars for the 3th world unstable connections.

  10. BMesh should be a milestone for 2.5. If BMesh isn't integrated in 2.5 the result will be that the devs will code new features on top of the old code which BMesh will have to recode again.

I think BMesh is worth doing something like "okay guys, we're integrating BMesh now, if you code doesn't work with it, fix it!"
