"My Favorite Way" by Black Drawing Chalks

I can finally show the video here, since it already had its premiere on Brazilian MTV. :)

I was responsible for the 3D modeling and animation on this. The studio I work at (NitrocorpZ) has other apps in its production pipeline, but Blender is the only one used for 3D stuff.

The smoke was made with the standard Blender particle system, where the particles were displayed as a group of Icospheres to make the rotoscoping stage a bit easier. It was not the intention to achieve something photoreal here, but just a nice flow to make it easier to draw the smoke in 2D.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Amazing! I love the render style, like, Free Style? What did you use for the rendering engine? It reminds me of some Beatles videos. The shading gives it a 2D look, yet it had to be drawn with 3D because it is so seamless! And how did you do the transitions from like when the words "morph" into the pictures (and vice versa). Did you model the words in Blender? Can you tell I would love a behind-the-scenes scoop?

  2. Hey, guys! Thanks a lot for your comments! :)

@Papasmurf: the video wasn't made entirely on Blender. The production had a mix of 2D and 3D animation. The words, for example, were hand drawn. I used lots of "shadeless" materials, and some setups with the Node Editor. The render was Blender internal. One of the biggest challenges on this was to try a seamless integration with the various type of media we had. :)

  3. Mandou mt bem cara!!
Agora quero ver ele passando na MTV aqui! Acho q vai ser a primeira vez q eu vou ver alguma coisa do Blender na TV msm.. heheh

    :)

  4. Very enjoyable to watch. I appreciate your skill at human figure modeling and drawing. I was reminded of the work of Peter Max with the colors. It must have been a monumental task to make a video this long. Great job!

  5. Casey R Williams on

Great video, and the song wasn't too bad either. I'm surprised people are complaining about it. Where were they in the '80s I wonder?

  6. @Casey R Williams:
Who's complaining? With maybe two exceptions, this seems like a very positive set of responses to me!

Oh, and I wasn't around for the first half of the '80s, and don't remember the second half. But that's just me.

  7. Wow, nice vid, nice music, and i love the "yellow submarine" style going on here; funny, because you wouldn't ever guess that Blender was used here unless someone told you. Or maybe that's just me...
