Two new tutorials on cmiVFX by Sebastian König

9

001Sebastian König has created two new video-tutorials for cmiVFX. The topics are unwrapping+baking and texture-painting. Note: cmiVFX provides on-line streaming video tutorials - not DVD's.

Sebastian writes:

I am very proud to announce two all fresh and new video-tutorials on www.cmiVFX.com! Both of them are part of the new cmiDirect initiative, which covers shorter videos with a stronger focus on one single topic.

The first one is about unwrapping and baking in Blender.

In about 1 hour of online video-training I explain how to unwrap the mammoth, which I have been modeling in the previous tutorial , and how to bake normal,- displacement- and occlusion-maps.
See the press release below for more details.

The second tutorial is about texture-painting in Blender:

In more than 1 hour I explain how to setup multiple UV-textures and how to use Projection-Paint to clone them onto the basic UV-map. You will learn how to setup an efficient GLSL-material for painting and how to use stencil-maps to do more complex painting tasks.
See the press release below for more details.

Both videos are available for $19.95USD at www.cmiVFX.com.
If you want to check out the quality of the cmiVFX online video-player, just register for free and watch my free Blender-Introduction-Video.

Press release

cmiVFX Launches 2 New Blender Training Videos for the new cmiDirect short video initiative
Watch High Definition Training Videos For The Visual Effects Industry Instantly From Anywhere In The World.

Curitiba, PR, Brazil August 26th, 2009 — cmiVFX | cmiStudios launches a brand new way of delivering videos for its fast growing user base. This new series of training videos is called cmiDirect. Why "direct"? The videos are DIRECT to the point and focus on one topic at the time. This will enable artists all over the world to have access to the information they need immediately without sorting through longer feature length videos. These videos explain all the information you need in depth and to the topics extent. We will also be including discount bundles of our videos in the future to help save additional money. When it comes to high end CG and VFX training, there is only once choice... cmiVFX!

To kick off this rapid delivery of multiple topic training videos, we started with an in depth look at the every popular Blender. Listed below are this weeks latest videos, Blender Unwrapping and Baking, and Texturing. These are very complete topics at a discounted price.

Blender Unwrapping and Baking

UNWRAPPING!

A good UV-Layout is the base for texture-, normal- or displacement-map-baking and the inevitable foundation for any texture-painting. Luckily, UV-unwrapping in Blender is very easy! Learn how to quickly create great UV-Layouts with Blender‘s powerful unwrapping-tools. Select edgeloops and mark seams in seconds, loop-tag edges as seams and use Blender's UV-Editing-Tools to edit and improve your UV-Layout. Minimize angle- and area-stretching and pack UV-Islands to make the best use of the image-space.

BAKING!
Sculpting in Blender is nice and fine, you can produce a lot of detail using multi-resolution meshes, but dealing with these high-res models during the animation-process can be very inefficient, prevent you from creating shape-keys for facial animation, slow down the viewport and of course will waste a lot of disk-space. So why not bake all the nicely sculpted details to displacement- and normal-maps and use them on your low-res model instead? Got some baking-problems because of intersecting faces? You won`t struggle again!

This video is available today at the cmiVFX store.

Blender Texturing

PAINT GLSL

This Tutorial will show you how to paint realistic textures with Blender. With the recently added projection-painting you have now a really powerful and versatile toolset for texture-painting in Blender. You can setup a variety of different brushes, use textures to adjust the brushstroke and easily pick any color from within the viewport. Create and setup color-palettes to have your favorite colors always accessible with just one single mouse-click. Having issues with seams? No more! Blender will take of that! Texture-painting has never been easier! And whith GLSL-Materials enabled you can do that in the 3d-viewport with realtime diffuse- and specular- shading, texture-layering and all that on a 4k-texture-map.

THE NEXT LEVEL!

Take your texturing-experience in Blender to the next level! Use multiple UV-Layouts to clone images directly onto your texture-map. Simlpy project the UVs from the view and assign photosYou can use up to 8 different UV-layouts and project any photo on them, adjust the mapping with Blender?s powerful UV-editing-tools and easily access them just like an image palette. With Blender?s texture-painting-tools you can also create and paint stencil-maps to control on wich areas you want to paint and which one you want to exclude.

This video is available today at the cmiVFX store.

Both videos are about ~1hr long.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. @Jeff, good to hear someone rate these tutorials. I've been very tempted by some of the CMI tutorials and the cost isn't too prohibitive but sadly my time is.

Looks like I'll pick these tuts up when things get quieter here.

  2. which skill level are those tutorials targeted to?
what previous knowledge is assumed for one to get the most out of the tutorials?
    the description is highly lacking..

    also, is there a preview?
i'd like to have a glimpse of what i'm going to purchase before i'm motivated to make the purchase..

  3. @dyf_,
the tutorials are targeted to intermediate to advanced users, although i think that even a beginner should be able to follow. but for these two you should know how to model and how to navigate blender's interface.
the tutorials are standalone videos, but they are part of the mammoth-tutorial-series. still you really don't need to have watched the previous tuts, it's just that if you want to you, can have a complete project tutorial series from start to end. but each tutorial stands on his own and focuses on a special topic.
unfortunately there is no preview, but as it's said in the article, you can watch my free basic blender introducation video on the site.

  4. I thank sebastion for working on these videos with us. Over the next few quarters I plan to lead blender training into a market that it had NOT been available for. The High end market that is. The software is becoming quite a joy to watch grow up into a professional solution... yet we are still not seeing it in studios as much as the other big boys. (Autodesk mainly) then sidefx houdini right up there.

Since cmi catered to the masses, including large studios (big budget to little budget) we hope that blender sticks in the big budget film industry. As it grows, we will be there supplying the best training on the planet by the artists you respect. (AS long as they can teach! )

I hope you all enjoy our efforts, make some money and retire young.

You can always reach our support line with any questions.

I hope to meet all of you through online means at some point.

  5. Thanks Chris!
And in fact, I really appreciate that cmiVFX is starting this professional support services for Blender. It is nice to see it in a row with the other high-end-apps. And I really think this is a good way to open up Blender for the larger studios - or rather open up the larger studios for us Blender-Users! ;-)
    Cheers,
    Seb
