We are a group of young (under 15 year old) film makers from New Zealand, who use Blender for the 3D elements in our movies. We recently made a short film called 'Havoc' and entered it in the 'Meccano Mad Movie Challenge' - a short film competition run by one of the after-school TV shows here in New Zealand.

We spent around 8 weeks on the film, around 5 of which were used for post-production. For the editing we used Adobe Premiere Pro (CS4), After Effects for compositing, Syntheyes and Icarus for match moving and of course, Blender was used for all the 3D things.

The short film as well as the 'Behind the Scenes' and the other entries can all be watched online. We hope you enjoy it!

Our entry has made it into the final round, and the winner is decided by TXT vote. So if you enjoyed our entry, we would really appreciate your support. To vote, txt S2VOTE A to 8972. I'm not sure if voting is open to people outside of New Zealand, but (definitely within NZ and maybe internationally as well) voting is free and if you vote you're automatically entered to win an MP3 player. Thank you so much for you're support!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Big Buck Born is back!

Watched this last night... checked out the behind-the-scenes video just now...

    Absolutely awesome work! Inspiring!

  2. Gawd almighty! If sub-15 year olds can already make something like this, what will they come up with when they're 21?!!

    Very nicely done!!!

  3. Effects and production wise, for their age, this was pretty excellent. I do agree with the first post though, the near silent acting kinda ruined things for me. Work on the acting, and you guys will be on top of things. I know if a giant robot was tearing my house up, I'd be screaming at the top of my lungs like a girl.

  4. Very cool, especially when you consider age groups. But I hope next time they fight robots designed to withstand planetary impacts AND minor gas explosions. :)

  5. Fantastic job, everyone! You did a great job planning out the shots, filming, match-moving and editing. I know of two other brothers that produce movies together, so maybe you'll follow in their footsteps.

  6. Thanks so much for all the encouraging comments! :D

@people-who-metioned-Video-Copilot: Our director is a big fan of Andrew Kramer/Video Copilot, so lots of inspiration was taken from him.

@blenderfan: You have a good point, we probably should have thought that through a bit better :P

    thanks again!

  7. I second that Ddwagnz and Billamu! Keep it up Kiwis!!!
Awesome stuff, I'm quite jealous that you got a head start on me!
I'm already 15 and havn't gotten round to finishing a blender project as amazing as this one!
    :D good work

  8. @Xolotl: 'with 15? Probably we see their name in the credits of the new pixar-films in ten years'

Why is Pixar hailed as the Holy Grail? You work as one tiny element doing the same boring thing every day for months. Why not continue to work with a small team (< 10) on live-action/CGI-movies, so that you can do more things with is more challenging.

  9. Hamiltron - City of the Future -

Haha - good work, really impressive - although your accents?! District 9 showed us that aliens can land anywhere on Earth - not just in the US.

  10. Thanks for all the support and encouragement everyone!
Our film won the overall competition and also got the prize for best special effects :)

  11. Anyone have a working link for the making of video?

Never mind. It seems that you have to load it several times to get it to show. It worked now.

  12. Again Amazing work! I knew you would win :D
I've always wondered how involved New Zealand was with blender.
I reckon its time New Zealand had a community website!
If Your interested, pop over to blendnz.co.nr (a temporary site I whipped up the other day) and quickly fill in a form to let me know! If we get enough Kiwi's interested then we'll go ahead and make the website!!!

  13. Great work team! I wish you all the best with this entry and hopefully it will win. This will be a stepping stone for you. It will give you an understanding and knowledge that will benefit you for the rest of your lives. The long hours and the effort you put into this project are so vital in today's world.
