11

luxlogoRC5 of the upcoming LuxRender version has been released.

Yay hay! Luxrender is getting faster. not only with new accelerator the recent rc build also now sports a photon map render option. This should give the speed boost i was griping about earlier. Originally as planned, this version was supposed to concentrate only on unbiased rendering. But look at that, photon map is already in there. This should be the last rc before the final release. I don't know how much will they add in version 0.6, thinking about the huge changes from just 0.5. download available for all platform including 32 and 64 bit.

Changes since RC4:

  • Significant fixes to bidirectional integrator (those are so significant that if you had scenes rendered with bidirectional you should rerender them)
  • remove the warm up phase of the metropolis sampler
  • switch to boost 1.39
  • lots of bugs and memory leaks fixes

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Seriously impressive speed improvements!

I'll now keep this renderer as a second option - for those High quality show-off renders I sometimes (want) to make.

There are however quite a few bugs in the luxblend script.

    1) It won't update the material preview (random, it will sometimes...and sometimes not)
    2) Some of the menu items hides until you "provoke" them to appear.
    3) It mistakes many materials for "light"...and these just gets rendered as invisible

Minor details, as it's fairly easy to create nice new materials with Luxrender / luxblend...

Nice going guys, I'm going to watch (and use) this one a bit more than before.

  2. On a sidenote.... my 4-core workstation has never worked so hard....

...It kickstarted a fan-speed (sound) I have NEVER heard from this computer before...It sounded
    something like an airplane!

  3. @Reekdeb: LuxRender is an unbiased renderer. It never finishes, you have to stop the process once you're satisfied with the results.

  4. @Ravn, one of the biggest compliants against Blender internal before the GSOC project was the slowness of its raytracer, replacing the internal render engine with an even slower render engine would not go down well with most espiecally animators.

Besides that LuxRender is used by other programs besides Blender Maya, Cinema4D and XSI all have exporters.

Enough yapping and time to test this out I have been using release canidate 3 for a while now so am keen to see what release canidate 5 has on enough. I didn't really use the 4th release canidate.

  5. @tyrant monkey

It may not go well with animators, but certainly is wonderful for stills and architectural visualization...
