Real-time view of Durian sales

26

Despite just having become a father last week, JesterKing has already picked up coding again and has hacked together a real-time (well, updated every 5 minutes) graph of the Durian sales. The height of the graph represents 2000. Each dark gray horizontal line represents 500, where the lighter gray are 250. More info on his blog. Haven't ordered yet? Here's your chance!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Ditch the compiler and play with the kid!! -sorry.. I guess I like kids too much.. then again.. you are the father of your tracking app.. so I guess you are playing with your children.. >.>.. I'm McSorrylet for all this..

  2. @Caster - of course I focus on my kids first! This script was written last night when jesterPrincess was crying a lot and just being awake. While having her on my lap, playing with her, I very well can write some simple PHP code every now and then :)

    Nothing to be LetSorry about!

I hope it's possible to interpret it as a third degree equation or any other increasing degree, then there is a hope, but it look too much like an ln function... try to change some parameters in maclaurin equation for ln then you might could find some hope...

A question, what happens if the durian team doesn't sell 2000 DVDs?

  4. Extrapolated it wouldn't even make 750 units. I hope this will get a boost on the next pay day.
Hopefully Durian will get more main stream sponsor like Divx did. These high quality open movies are an ideal testbed for the sponsor's own technology (like divx is doing now and hopefully those other 3D projection stuff potential sponsors, renderfarms companies, etc etc)

  5. I think it would be interesting to see the graphs for the other open movies, to know if there are peaks like when the movie goes final public.
if i were rich i would buy 50 right now just to make a funny shape on that line :)

  6. I'm a broke American too! I pre-ordered Durian anyway -- it's that important! I'm not quite doing without food just yet, but I'm pinching every penny. I see this as a small investment, the return on which will benefit both the Blender Foundation and myself. Not to mention, the more money the Durian Team gets from us now, the better Blender 2.50 and 2.51 (or at least 2.50a) will be for everyone! That's got to be worth it, right?

  7. @Toontje: Huh? When I extrapolated it (somewhat linearly), it came out to around 1200-1400 units. Are you perhaps mixing up the 250-worth lines and the 500-worth lines? Or are you assuming that the curve will continue a flattening trend?

I imagine that the first blog updates of production concepts could do a lot to boost sales as well -- IIRC, that's what happened with Apricot.

  8. I already had bought a DVD if it wasnt that expensive. 34€ is okay, but the additional taxes and shipping fees make it too expensive for me........

  9. It would be very good to e-download the DVD and pay for it via paypal. Will there be a chance to download the Durian DVD via web site?

  10. Is there the ability to pay by check? I don't do credit card purchases over the interweb, but would still like to see money go to Blender 2.5 development...

  11. Gotta love those MRTG-like graphs, I must admit that the unit cost for this one is slightly hampered by the piss poor exchange rate the pound to euro is atm.

I'll pre-order, no doubt, but it'll be once I get some other things tended to 1st :D

  12. I paid for one to get my name in the credits but had it sent to a kid in Brisbane because the discs didn't come with .ogg theora or dirac. When google opens the source and patents behind On2's VP8, I expect a VP8 version to ship on those discs. Maybe I'll actually want a set, and pay for another one.

  13. While I appreciate all the work that goes into these projects and into blender, I find doing them in the name of advancing open source and then turning around and dismissing open source codecs for their physical distribution quite hypocritical.

  14. @ethana2 The open movie projects are not done in the name of advancing open source, the are done in the name of advancing Blender even if other open source tools are used. Personally i dislike the mess that all codecs have generated. Having to wade through an alphabeta soup of codecs to watch video p*sses me off to no great end.

Back on topic I wish I had a credit card to contribute getting 3 dvds for 34 euros is great deal and the money goes to a great endeavour such as this.

  15. @tyrant monkey:
I don't know the situation in different areas, but PayPal can be used with a bank account, so you shouldn't need a credit card if that's all that's stopping you...

  16. @Gryphon I thought about that especially trying to get some foundation dvds to advance my knowledge etc but according to the law here I can't really use paypal to do money transfers and all.
