Manu Järvinen wins Assembly 2009 graphic competition

profit_motive_has_no_conscienceA very nice piece of work by Manu Järvinen. His first work in Blender, and you can download the .blend to see how he did it.

Manu writes:

My first time with Blender. In my mind I succeeded. This was made for Assembly, but I'll continue polishing it up for a high quality poster version sized 8435x11899 pixels. I might release that one also after it is finished, but we'll see.

Manu Järvinen (Maxon/HBC) won the Assembly 2009 graphic competition with his first Blender made picture. Ha was kind to let even the blend source available. Have a look on the masterpiece at scene.org (pick a link under 'download from') ...and check his website.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. WOW! That is impressive!!

I like that image a lot. Didn't know you could to that googooking cartoonlike rendering in blender...

Did he use blender internal renderer?

However, what is that inside the earth? The liquid core? Or some gold?

  2. Hello everyone.
It was very nice to notice there had been an article written about me and my piece here. Thought it would've been nice if someone told me they're going to write an article about me here. I would've very gladly offered some more information about the making of this thing if I was asked to.

And by the way, the download-link points to a wrong outdated version of my piece. This is the new one:
    ftp://ftp.scene.org/pub/parties/2009/assembly09/grfx/profit_motive_has_no_conscience_by_maxon__hbc.zip

The .blend-file has been fixed to render straight after you open the file and also the earth-texture has been included into the .blend.

Here's also a large resolution poster about the whole thingy:

ps. Why I'm not allowed to send this image to blenderartists.org for critique? I sent a thread but it was never published. Is it because of this news post?

    Thank you very much

  5. My god I hate that this board doesn't support long posts and says absolutely nothing what's wrong with the post if it's too long! If I hadn't copied my long write before trying to post it I would've lost it entirely. Phew

  6. maxon, great piece you have there. Saw it "live" actually in last saturday. :) About BA forum, yes, it is not the most clear one for beginners. One thing that will get you rejected is if you have any links in your post. There might be other rules too but I'm not so sure about that. Thanks for publishing .blend!

You need to have more than ten (10) posts before you can post images there...

  8. Very good work. It looked to me like part of it was raster painted. I guess I'll check out the *.blend file to see what parts were Blender rendered. Great job with the composition and the layout of this piece.

The only thing that would make even more poignant would be tiny animals or people on the ruined globe.

  9. maxon, you can't post links or images I believe on BlenderArtists until you have a number of posts. That happened to me too. I think they had some spam problems at one time. I just private messaged a board administrator and he fixed me right up. I'll ask for you in IRC though.

  10. @Maxon: your initial messages was caught by our spamfilter. It's unfortunate that we need to use one, but if we didn't, this website would have over 2,500 spam messages every day :(

  11. Very very very nice picture! It took me at least 10 minutes to find out how you did the beatifull global illumination. And yes, that are A LOT of lamps.
    Thnx for sharing!

  12. Maxon: Your work is awesome! I past the last hour browsing your site, amazed with all your work.
I'm curious about what software did you use for those works, and how do you see Blender compared with your previous experience with other packages. I can see looking at your blend file that you didn't have much problems moving your modelling and compositing workflow to Blender (actually, there are lots of things about that file that look like made by a seasoned blenderhead).
Could you please share with us a few thoughts about how was using Blender for this work?

  13. *grumble*
Sometimes seeing amazing works like this is really inspiring. For some reason, right now I'm just really discouraged.

But congratulations, maxon. It looks amazing.

    *grumble mumble mutter fume...*

Sigh... looked again... it really is quite sick (that's good). Keep up the good work.

    So good. Man.

  14. Hello Manu, This is a really fantastic and expressive image. It also perfectly captures a certain mood of the moment. I also looked at your website and was so impressed, you have SERIOUS talent, not just in use of software but ideas and concepts, just amazing. Also great links in the extras section : )

PS, would also love to see a making of.

  15. Congratulations!

I am very happy for Manu not just because I am very bad with Blender and have no idea how to do anything creative 3d with it. But also as a long time Cinema 4D user I had real steep edge to start and difficulty even to try Blender for anything.

This kind of 3d illustration work really blasted my last grimy doubts about this difficult-to-use open source software. Now downloaded alpha 2.5. :)
