Trailer: 'Babioles' by Matray

Matray writes:

I'm a french director, and I'm working on the development of an animation TV show called "Babioles" (Bawbles in English). It will be a 3 minutes episode TV show with some cute little CG characters made with Blender.

Those little characters are plastic toys that human have forgot about and they're wandering in the real world, looking for hugs from the adults. But then they are confronted with reality !

We're now starting the preproduction of a 3 minutes pilot.

We have made a teaser that I've animated by myself with blender and we're willing to continue with this great software ! So we're looking for artists working with Blender living in France or close, to work with us on the pilot.

We're shooting in September and we will work on the CG animation from the middle of September to the end of October.

Here is some stuff I've made : www.matray.org or www.vimeo.com/matray/
And here is my producer's website : www.autourdeminuit.com

Hoping to get some answers,
Cheers !

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Too bad 2.5 will be released sooner than expected, so expect a buggy release, not to mention that everyone in the industry will be watching the 2.5 release closely, if it proves bad/incomplete, then Blender is dead.

  2. Shiretoko: Do you really believe that? They're going to release it, without knowing if the version is stable enough ?
From what I know, they've been developing it for 2 years now, this version is the one that's going to be used in production of Durion Project. Any found bug will imediately be reported and fixed. They'll do advanced stuff, so, it's granted that most of the users, wont even notice any diferences between those versions. Blender 2.5, is going work just fine! That's my point of view.

  3. Shiretoko sounds like one of those rumor mongers. Even if the 2.5 release is buggy they'll fix it and it will by no means kill Blender. Photoshop can be buggy - but that doesn't kill it! They release fixes and everyone moves on.

As for the short teaser, I loved it. Very cute and tastefully funny. Though I don't speak french (I expect that it will be in French if there is any dialog) I'll keep an eye on this project.

    Great job!

  4. Blender 2.5 feels relatively stable right now, especially for a pre-release version. I don't see why everybody's hyped up over instability when it's been in the works for so long now.

And to Matray, good job. I don't live anywhere near Europe but I'll still give some moral support. :)

  5. OboeNerd: It seems that "Shiretoko" has the wrong idea about whats been done with Blender 2.5. He probably didnt even cared about reading.

  6. @Tadd Mencer: It's the first impression that counts. Let's say you are a Maya user and it happens that you hear about all the hype and buzz about blender 2.5 and you download your version and try it out, and it has bugs all over, and crashes frequently, what will you think of such software? Stability First, Features later.

It's better to have a working bicycle than wrecked Ferrari.

  7. @Shiretoko: i'll admit, it did take me many tries to actually start liking Blender. you are right that the first impression counts a lot. but i started with older versions, from like 2.3 and 2.4. they've progressed a long way since then. i'm also wary about the hype in 2.5, and i think i'm trying to hold my expectations low to avoid any letdowns, but whatever they come out with, i'm confident it will impress more than disappoint. even if 2.5 has problems on release, 2.49a is still a strong alternative, so i disagree that such an outcome would "kill Blender". i was an avid Maya user for many years, and well, Maya isn't exactly crash-free either. and with some of the last revisions, the folks at Autodesk also have been cramming more features in or mixing about the interface. Blender isn't perfect either, but i suppose most software goes thru similar development cycles. if you're worried about 2.5 stability, then just use 2.49a until 2.5 is actually released. comparing 2.5 to anything right now is like comparing an alpha to a release, or not even alpha, since 2.5 isn't fully coded yet.

    nice short. squish. hehe :)

  8. @shiretoko: I'm a Maya user and let me tell you if I was looking for stability Maya would not be my first choice. I'll admit 2009 has been better but all the versions I've used previous to 2009 have crashed at least twice during my day. I've been following blender for a while now. I really want to get in and do stuff but the current interface is a downer for me. Not going to lie. I've tried it even got a little good with it but then had to come back to maya and forgot the blender hotkeys and quirks. But when 2.5 comes out I'm definitely going to give it a go. Especially with the revamped animation stuff they talk about!! that excited me. Along with customizing the hotkeys to be more "standard"!! But I know that there will be bugs in 2.5 its a complete overhaul of the old blender they can catch a lot of bugs but not all. But I'm not going to be turned away from blender. I may not use it as my main software if there is a big bug in it or something but I'll still learn it.

Blender can't die. since it's open source even if it's abandoned someone sometime will pick up development as a hobby and it will start again gaining developers and users.

  9. @Matray: Nice humour and good characterisation. Love the way the little blob shifts side to side impatiently in the lift. I look forward to seeing your finished episodes and wish you all the best. :)

@others: Not really the place for a discussion, I guess. But remember that Blender's release model is quite different to other "closed" software. Blender 2.5 bugs are being found and reported by a large base of curious testers, and documentation is starting to be written already even though it is very much pre-alpha. The extensive use in the Durian project will likely identify and lead to resolution of more bugs and the large user base will also be trying out all the new features and testing them to destruction during this period too.

The open nature of the source code leads to many builds being released as development progresses. Each build has all bug fixes to the date of it's creation. This is far different to waiting for an update to be considered worthwhile by developers of a closed source application. Each bug fix is available as it is completed rather than waiting for a large patch containing a batch of bug fixes.

My advice would be... Expect the initial release to have bugs. Expect all showstopping bugs to be fixed soon after discovery. Expect to download bug-fixed builds promptly. Expect the release that will follow Durian be fully production ready.

Even if Bmesh (ngons and a more friendly scripting interface to mesh editing) doesn't make it into the initial release, I would be vey surprised if it doesn't make it into the production ready release the the end of the Durian project. After the inclusion of this, expect a vast array of mesh editing tools to be created.

A tool is only as good as it's user and Blender will not be the tool for everyone, but it is powerful now and will become more so in the future.

  10. I agree. Hilarious! I hope you get the support in the French Blender Community to pull this thing off. You might try Belgium too, lots of French speaking (even though they're sometimes Flemish) people there that like Blender.

  11. Wow, really funny one.
It also makes me think of Minuscules.
Really nice. How many episodes are planed to be done?
