Sculpting A Dog Character Demo

17

sculpt-dogIn these two videos, Garet Gratien shows an easy technique to model a dog. " This technique makes it possible to work without exceeding 500.000 faces."

"I can keep much details and a fast posting.

I work starting from a basic model on which I then create the retopology and detail the new model.
I create the normal maps for the lowpoly model .
It is easier to work from a model already correct than to make a retopology on a too subdivided model."

The narration is in French.

    That's pretty awesome!
I never really knew exactly what the retopo tool was. Now I think I'll try using it with my next character design.
Thanks for the links, and thanks for the videos Garet Gratien!

  2. By looking at the tut I can say one thing - your computer is better than mine. ... LMAO.
Jokes apart, I think its a good video. :)

  3. Although I don't speak french, I believe he sculpted a base, then retopo, then continued to sculpt a subdiv of the retopo'd mesh. I just wanted to say that from personal experience, in more complicated models when you sculpt folding details that method tends to produce erroneous normal maps.

I found the best method is fully scultping the high res first (try to make it as final as possible) then you retopo a lower res mesh from the final, otherwise you may end up doing twice the work.

Other than that, it was a nice demonstration.

  4. I think it would be great to have the decimate modifier recoding finished by genscher:

If the new decimate modifier will do what I think then the Retopo process would be just a click and some adjustments.
"Unfortunately" Genscher is working on the Smoke Simulator now, because there hasn't been much reaction of the community regarding the decimate modifier.

Well, it's time to leave some comments on his site. and donate some money..

  5. Even though I don't understand French, the tutorial was very clear to me. Thank you for doing this.. Great work, and beautiful dog character!

  6. Although this way obviously works for him I don't think it's the most fficient way to make a model from scratch. but if someone already made a model in zbrush etc i can see the process being the most effective one.

  7. I greatly appreciate the pédogie of the tutorial and it is true that the native language is fun!
@DeMoN I take note of your comment.

  8. so you'll know ligthwave rep. are showing interest in blender 2.50 development.I can't understand french
on this video. Crazy uncle out!

  9. I didn't get the UV part. I'm a UV noob, so:
How does he decide where to place the seams? Why before further sculpting? He resizes the UV tiles, does that lead to deformations when applying textures?

Are there any redommended tutorials on that topic?

  10. On part 2 after he creates the UV unwraps for normal maps, he begins to sculpt again. During this sculpting stage, does he actually add polygons on the base model? Or does the view port automatically calculates the normals (for the sculpting) without actually adding new faces to the object?

  11. Martini Martian on

It would be nice if posts about video tutorials include links to the Ogg/Theora-formatted videos, which is supported natively by Firefox 3.5 and Opera. Who needs flash when we have HTLM 5?

  12. Thanks for nice tutorial!

btw: can somebody tell me how can I add some stream video to my web pages, looking like these videos?
    thanks

Quoique tu peux me dire ou donner sera tres apprecie.

    Merci beaucoup,

    Joe Hamilton
