'The Secret of Kells' has won the audience award on the Annecy '09 film festival. Parts of this movie have been produced in Blender by the Belgian studio Digital Graphics, who we also know from 'Friday or another day' and 'The Mask of the Red Death'. Congratulations guys!

Digital Graphics have worked during 2 years on Tomm Moore's full cartoon "The secret of Kells" (Brendan et le secret de Kells in French).

This movie is currently available in theaters in France, Belgium an Holland since 11 th february. The Irish released is 6th March. Hope we could have a distribution in UK and states in the future.

We use "Blender" for a part of 2D and 3D effect on this Movie like all movies we worked on.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Congrats on the award! I have to say, unpacking this sort of thing in a pipeline scenario would make for a great talk at the Blender Conference. Please consider... :)

  2. I love the Book of Kells!
@Tony I was about to say the same thing. The studio is French too. So I don't know where the "anime" comment came from.

  3. Hi all,

thanks a lot for you congrats but we are a part of the complete movie creation.
"Brendan" is a Irish, french and Belgian coproducion. 6 studios worked during 2 years on this project :

Cartoon saloon (Ireland, Tomm's moore company) : Creation, BG, Part of key animation, flash effects, ....
Lightstar (Brasil) : inbetween and scanning
Kechkemet films (Hongary) : part of animation, in between, scanning
Walking the dog (Belgium) : part of animation, 3D sequences, part of compositing
Digital Graphics (Belgium) : All ink and paint, 2D effects, part of 3D, 3 sequences compositing
Sprit studio (France) : 70 % of compositing

Note : since "Friday or another day" all movies we made is in a part with Blender like :
Oscar and the pink lady, Sans Rancune, La chanteuse de Tango, Insomnia, Home, Hand of Headles Man, ...

I can talk about this in the next Blender Conference.

We prepared the new Tomm's Moore project "The Song of the Sea" ( see http://theblogofthesea.blogspot.com/ )

    All the best,

    Serge

  4. Stunning. Very professionally done, and brilliant artistic direction. I really, really hope this comes out in the States. If nothing else, I'll definitely want a dvd. =) Brilliant job.

  5. I have seen the movie with my 2 sons, in March in Belgium (Liège), and they love it, me too.

The graphics are stunning, originals and the music is beautiful.

And now that I know that Blender has been used, I love it a little bit more.

@Umbroth, I hope there will be a making of on the DVD, i'm waiting for it.

  6. :) nice to see Ireland represented in the animation world. Cartoon Saloon seem to have been working on this forever (before i went to college in some form).

  7. @ Bmud

maybe all feel the japanese feel, since the French people have the most similar style to them, from all the Europe.

I saw these days a horror french movie, and if that movie would be doubled in japanese, I wouldn't figure out that is french :)

  8. too Anrn and random and other,

    Blender works :
    - librairies like : mist, rain, snow, ink darkness, smoke, …

    - ChiRho page sequence (last sequence)

You can see some stuff on my homepage website (choose in video player "showreel animation 2009")
