The Absolute Barrier Function

I'm Guillaume Magnaudet, a multimedia designer working in a french company: SILAB. I've recently created an animation about two metabolic pathways particularly important in the maitenance of skin barrier function homeostasis.

I exclusively used Blender (2.48) for all the work. No image editor, or editingsoftware... It seems to me, and to other people in my company, that the result is quite good. I hope this can be a good example of using Blender ! It might be interesting to other Blender folks... I tried to write an article in english into my new blog.

  1. Hey, what is the concept behind this animation? It is particular product of the company? I do not attempt to comment animation itself, for I am involved in the similar matters and comment would be not objective, but it can be interesting to hear more about the subject... especially what scientific team told you.

  2. I'm a biology student and for as far as I know (golgi)vesicles are transported along microtubules or by difussion but do not have 2 propellors. However, the explanation is very clear.

  3. I like the way you used Blender to tell the story. A process is a story and I never thought of it that way before. Simplicity made the story easier to understand for me at least. Great ideas. Thanks for posting this.

  4. I think this animation needs some work.

    It rather looks like student work on a technical level and how tools are used
    and elements arranged in the composition.

    I think it gets much better to the end.

  6. This was made to illustrate a scientific process, not to amaze with special effects. I don't know most of the terms, but I did get the basic idea, so I'd say the animation is a success.

  7. I think the animation is very informative and objective (this is not a cartoon, dudes). I just didn't like the captions with 3d text; it's hard to read and lacks some contrast with the background.

    Anyway, it's a nice work. Congratulations.

  9. I thought it was well done. It fits its purpose and looks nice despite its simplicity. The only thing that bugged me is the propellers. I'm under the impression that biology doesn't have "things that spin" in it's bag of tricks, but maybe I'm wrong.

  10. I think it's a good clip to show some basic Blender features!
    But for visualisation of some functionality of skin-tissue it could have some more details to make it more nice (like Textures and materials!!)!
    It's not satisfying me!
    Or is it about some limitations of Blender?? If you look at scientific demos made with f.e. Maya you should know what I mean.

    Well, thanks for all your comments. It's very important for me to know what is your feeling about this animation.
    I agree with most of your criticisms, and I could add one more: the sound is missing. I mean, this animation is displayed during scientific conferences of our scientific communication manager. So when the animation runs, he explains everything that happen into the screen. It's easier to understand...

    That's true, it is a very simple animation. But it was a challenge to me: make a support for the scientific team with less than 7 days of work (and 3 days of rendering). So I choose to create very simple objects in very simple scenes to explain a complex skin system.

    BalthazarBtf: Yes this is only cubes ! but Blender knows how to make Spheres too ;) With a lot of work (for me), I could do real cells, but if you create real cells you'll need real skin content too. There is so many things into your skin that it is impossible for me alone to create a real skin model. So, I decided to to focus on the story, not on realism.

    And sure, it's not a terrific animation. You know, I didn't want to do better than Big Buck Bunny :) This is just my way to use our favorite software in my professional environment.

    Thats the thing about that you can reply directly with who made it .

    The information here else then personal satisfaction about create something ,
    is that it take 3 days rendering something that looks yet simple .
    (for expectations about what a 3D is ,its hard to made)

    What about than more complex full length movies ,must last a year to render .

    *only about it to be a skin ,must use other color to represent it clear .

  13. I think is a good use, or at least "fair use" ;-). It's nice that people shows his creation even if he is aware that's not the best animation or color balanced creation. I think this is a good balance between the ridiculous "look at my fantastic reflecting yellow cube" and extra-planetar Blender creations from some blenderheads.

    My main crit is it's an almost absolute lack of rhythm, but maybe this animation's goal is not to achieve rhythm but only to serve as a humble background of an expert talk...
    Keep using Blender, my terrestrian friend, and improve even more your skills!

  14. Congratulations Guillaume, I work in biological field (particularly in the biology of the skikn) and i understand all your animation. Don't worry about the unpleasant comments, criticism is easy!!!!
