Article submitted by Yorik van Havre. Chico Ortiz (Thorgal on blenderartists) just made a small but excellent blender game. The game was made for an exhibition called "Santos Dumont, designer" in São Paulo, Brazil, until 3rd of May. The exhibition shows many aeroplane sketches and models (one is full-size), and Chico made a small flight simulation game which runs on 4 screens inside the exhibition, so visitors can experiment flying the planes.
The aim of the game, the graphics, the gameplay, everything is very simple. You must choose one of Santos Dumont's planes, take off, and try to land on one of the runways before your (small) fuel tank gets empty. Several things are highly interesting in that game, the first being that this is a real, completely FINISHED game, made in 40 days. Everyone who already tried making games knows how hard this is. The second is the flight engine, one big python script made by Leandro Cassas. Everything is made with very simple game engine tools, but the way the little plane reacts to your fingers looks highly professional. The game has also nice old-game graphics, music and sound, can be controlled with a gamepad, and has a creative commons license.

Alberto Santos Dumont was truley a great man of vision. The fact that he released his airplane plans for free instead of patenting them reminds me of the spirit of the Blender Community and our wonderful Ton. I hope his dreams of world peace become a reality.
He invisioned a world where everyone could fly to other lands and cultures and get to know each other. In this way, friendships would form and people would be less likely to be convinced to go to war by those who would stand to profit from war.
Looking forward to playing this game.
The download speed is horribly slow, though. I'm getting 14.2KBytes/sec, which reminds me of those old analog 33.6K modems ;) Are the Internet connections to Brazil *that* slow?!
I'm getting 80kbyts/sec, so I suppose your're right or maby they just dont have cable or dsl.
i just lost the game :(
14bis forever! Yeehaw!
I mirrored the game here:

Hi
This is very good looking game with excellent idea behind to tribute the great aviator in time.
I tested this game, when it was posted to the blenderartist forum first time. Well done and very educating in some point.
but
Who ever wrote this
"The second is the flight engine, one big python script made by Leandro Cassas. Everything is made with very simple game engine tools, but the way the little plane reacts to your fingers looks highly professional."
Seriously, compare to what Flight Engine?!
@Xjazz:
Compared to any other engine done in 40 days.
@Olaf and Nathan:
We are sorry. Our internet conections works with walkie-talkies and lianas (Both holded by Telefonica, Spain).
Greetings!
Vovó,
Fram Brasil
@Vovo I know exactly how you feel. It's faster here to strap a letter and a screenshot print out to a goat and train it to run to the blender head quarters so your message gets posted on the website, go betty go!!
The first fibre obtic (broad band) cable wount hit our shores untill in a couple of months, so will stick to our Satellites and dialups :-(
@ dyf_:
Me too. :(
@Dyf and Mattroe:
Chuck Norris will never lose The Game. The Game will lose Chuck Norris.
una to muchhhhhhhhhh
@Bozo
Actually it could be the writer was simply comparing the game animations to the professional made arcade flight game animations.
In my book the Flight Engines are using at least a basics of the aerodynamic principals.
The connections here in Brazil are not bad. I've downloaded the game relatively fast.
Santos Dumont was the second inventor of the airplane and made some important improviments in
the development of this machine, but invented some strange things as a table for dinner with two meters in height.
The game looks funny!
@ Xjazz.
It could be. You should use your book and help to improve the game.
@ Aristocrata:
About Dumont being or not the second, please refer to Wikipedia, it goes further on this subject: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santos_Dumont scroll down and read a bit more about the controversy.
Wow! How many posts! :) Very happy!
I just noticed that it entered Blendernation today. Thank you very much Yorik! Thank you very much everyone! Nice addition ByronK!
About physics, our choice was going Arcade mode. But the game is very simple, it needs another improvements to be a real good arcade game, i think Yorik was generous here...
Feel free to help! We need your support!
Don't forget that this game is Creative Commons att 3.0, that means: it is yours!
Sorry about my weak English.
ChicO.
@ Bozo
Since you asked me to improve the game.
The FDM4BGE resource project (very much wip):

Fly trough the race track gates with mouse steering
Your call (j/k)
@ Chico
Thank you for the game and .blend file sharing.
No intention for the hijacking.
Saludos
Hijacking? You are hijacking nothing Xjazz! Thank you very much for your contribuition! Your file is awesome :)
Can i make a blog post about it? What is the licence of your file? Do you mind if i host it inside AS Dumont blog?
Yours,
ChicO.
BTW:
@Blinkozo: thank you very much for the mirror!
@ Chico
I'm glad you like it.
The FDM4BGE (flight dynamics model for the blender game engine) is my public bge resource hobby project in blenderartists.org forum.
The target is to create a plausible flight model/engine for the BGE community. I don't about the license stuff but it's free for use & development.
So, you can use and host it freely.
To be honest, the current code is a mess and I'm rewriting(slowly) the fdm4bge again from clean table.

Yeah i noticed your thread on Blendernation but i didn't see this file...
Happy to know that i can write the blog post and that you still work on this file :) Thank you!
'Yeah i noticed your thread on Blendernation but i didn't see this file…'
The latest file in BA has problem with on-screen debug data type settings. I was using int-type instead of the float-type, which cause some control jitter.
I'm proceeding with small steps :)
Please keep us updated! Your project is awesome.
If you have a mail list or something please contact me:chicortiz at gmail. I will keep an eye on Blenderartists as well ;)
Yours,
ChicO.
ATTENTION: THIS GAME WAS RELEASED IN BLENDER VERSION 2.48a.
NEW VERSION!
Improved gameplay: added dance pad support. Camera bug fixed, small file size. Works fine with Blender 2.49a.
