UPDATE 01-19-09Â Â Chris just sent me a new link for the site
A number of readers have been asking about the Blender Materials site being down. Christian aka paratron tells me that his ISP pulled the rug from under him; they deleted his site due to excessive use but did not warn him about the pending disruption, telling him instead after the fact. He's in the process of changing it over to another sever
"Actually I have some issues in getting my domain back from the provider (oh if I had just known that this was such a GREAT company before I started my contract) but I will put the whole project back up on my parastudios.de server for the next time until I get this done."
I'll keep you informed when he get's it back up and running.

What company was his host, so we all can avoid them in the future?
Must've been 1&1 Germany :-)
That's why whenever I see valuable (blender-related) resources on the web that are not hosted by big companies: wget -r http://www.site.com :-)
Too bad there's not some sort of cross between an database and torrents, with something like scons...
ty for the info.
@Alexander Ewering: The Hoster was http://www.toptip.net - what was cheap (and I don't earn any money with the project, so I thought it was a good idea... -.-).
Don't try this at home ^^
what idiots!
Don't wonder why the link isn't working yet - I just created the subdomain and the nameserver needs a moment to recognize it. Be patient ;)
Oh man, I am so glad this site came back online!
I was looking for it just the other night,
and I was rather disappointed to find that it was offline.
This appears to be a backup of the site, at least a couple months old.
what a bunch of twats! They should have given a message first, if they really needed to close the site, they have no rights to keep that domain name! If the new site is a old backup, I do hope the host kept the site somewhere on their server with all the latest content. Is there no way to sue them or something? We're a big community, there should be some leverage. send them a lot of angry mails or something...
There's a lot of caveats in web hosting that, I think, make it far more difficult for the average individual to not only find good hosting, but also find a good domain registrar. As overall advice, I suggest keeping one's domain names and hosting provider separate, so that, in events like this, you don't have to fight to get your domain name back. Secondly, I'd also have a realistic view of what hosting costs for the space and bandwidth you get. Getting 500 GB+ of space with 1 TB of transfer for $10/month, as advertised by oversellers, for instance, is a ticket to finding yourself booted off for unwritten terms of "overuse" and finding yourself gravely disappointed.
Some resources I'd personally suggest are webhostingtalk.com, which I find is a good place to research and ask questions. HostJury.com is also a good place to get reviews from actual customers of numerous hosts, and the owner of the site is very proactive about seeking out and eliminating reviews from hosts who try and cheat and give themselves glowing reviews.
I obviously have no idea what the circumstances are regarding the Blender Materials site, so this isn't necessarily directed at the owner, but I think it's good advice for anyone looking to get a website!
I was looking for the site earlier this week, sad to hear of your problems, hope you can get it resolved without too much struggle.
