Short film: The Death Grind

Watching too much TV makes your brain rot. Here's proof in an excellent short film by Endre Baráth [endi]: The Death Grind.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. That is a very interesting idea, good execution, and nice design and attention to detail (especially the animation of the eyes)... but I'm not quite sure - perhaps I didn't quite get the message, but it didn't really do it for me...

  2. x) from what I understand, the gears represent the brain activity.

While actively watching TV, only a small part of the brain was working.

When the TV turns to blank screen and noises the soul reboot and the whole brain work again...

I might be mistaken though. The story can be quite deep for something that short.

And +1 to what rpgsimmaster said about the quality of the animation. :)

  3. @aws357: Yes, I got that much, but for the quality of animation I had to wonder if it had a deeper meaning - otherwise I think it'd be a waste of the good quality time that was no doubt put into this; specifically I wonder the significance of the heart...disengaged while watching TV, engaged while not?... Perhaps the artist himself would be willing to enlighten us all? :D

  4. Nice work except 2 "little" things.
Some unreal reflections on the not moving gears and the eyes (incl. animation) don't look real!
    I think it's developable!

  5. i like it and i love your texture work. it's always excellent and inspiring…I really think that your textures are kind of outstanding – most of the time. very unique recognisable style but high quality also.

  6. The best thing for an artist is when we don´t need to pay attention to render, technics,
composition, etc. The best thing is when we can pay attention to the message inside the
video. Yes, the heart is all. And it´s the single piece that can really move everything.

    Very well done.

  7. Very nice! I'm really impressed. I've been waiting for some quality shorts from by individual Blender artists finally coming on the scene, and it looks like here is one. Very promising!

  8. Bravo! Good DOF, blur, sparks, lighting, excellent work on the gears. The face could have been better, but that's fine.

    God bless,

  9. wow, Very well done. I loved the rendering of the mechanincs, but I wish they had used a real person, or at least moved the mouth on the person a little, - caus' the facial animation and rendering was not at the same high level as the beautilful brain-part was. But apart from that, great!

Jahmaica: its not about doing better. Everyone has their right to critise somthing, as long as its constructive critism. witch I think is was. :)

  10. Great work!! Really nice. The movement of the gears and the sparks really impressed me. Keep up the great work. I'm looking forward to seeing what more this artist does!

  11. technically nice. i like the gears and lighting, and effects.
but other than that, message is underlining, and i really was hoping for more.

  12. Wow! love the message, love the music/sound effects, personally I would have placed the "heart" in the chest, but still animated the same way, Otherwise-let me just say-WAY better than what I can do!

    regards.

  13. I thought it was great! Very well done. Thanks!

    @Tim, LA
Why does it need to look "real"? Do you think all art needs to look "real"? Or perhaps just 3D art.

  14. There was more to the video then perhaps obvious, mainly the permanent damage done to thought by watching TV, as exemplified but the worn-out gears that will never work again. While the brain did spool up. some of it never will again.

    Awesome job.

  15. Very nice! Great idea, nice textures, lights and animation.
Just a little deprecation - by a mechanical engineer - about the shape of the gears: too simplified and unreal, against the realism and the care about the material.

I'd have a look at "Blender Mechanical Gears" tool in http://www.selleri.org/Blender/scripts/text.html
    (-:

Many congratulation anyway, expecially for the message I agree with.

  16. This is a fantastic example of what can be. For those of us that are just beginning to use Blender, it is a shining example to not give up :) Great work and thanks for sharing.

Just out of morbid curiosity, how long did your project take?

  17. This is exactly what my mum is doing, and I would say she never understand what's the meaning behind this video. Because she's having too much TV.

  18. Very nice short ! Great render :) Did you use yafray or just internal blender ?

May be the story and idea is a little too simple and too much explain, but the short is interesting.

    Cheers !!!
