"I'm Linux" Video Contest, win a trip to Tokyo!

51

The Linux Foundation is hosting a contest to create an "I'm Linux" commercial. Grand prize: a trip to Tokyo! Deadline is March 15, 2009.

From the announcement:

If you've been alive and aware of mass media over the last twelve months, you've probably seen television commercials from Apple and Microsoft touting their operating system. From Apple's ubiquitous "I'm a Mac" to Jerry Seinfeld to Microsoft's "I'm a PC" retort, operating system commercials have been flooding the airways. Except one OS has been notably absent – Linux.

While the Linux Foundation would love to spend millions promoting Linux on TV, it's simply not our style (or in our budget). Even more importantly, Linux isn't a top-down, commercially controlled operating system. It's a grassroots product of mass collaboration. That's why we're sponsoring a community contest to create a Linux video that showcases just what Linux means to those who use it, and hopefully inspires many to try it.

The winner will receive a free trip to Tokyo, Japan to participate in the Linux Foundation Japan Linux Symposium in October 2009. The winning video will also be unveiled at the Linux Foundation's Collaboration Summit in San Francisco on April 8, 2009.

Check out the contest rules and guidelines.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

1. It's like, you know, like two cousin fighting, one being a raging nerd the other one being the "I'm a cool 'gucci & prada wearing' guy".

But basically two UNIX-like cousins :p

The idea is funny, but that's all.

If people want Linux to be more widespread, it has to become "mainstream" and "popular".

What is funny is that a lot of linux users choose to use a linux OS precisely because they don't want to become "mainstream" and "popular".

Yet still craving for spotlight...

Humanity...

^______^

2. Oh, I'd like to add that as long as I can run Blender on it, any OS is good enough for me ^_____________________________^

3. ---------------------
This is beer, it comes in all kinds of flavors...
This is wine, it comes in all kinds of flavors...
Theses are operating systems, they come in all kinds of flavour...

The differences?
- one of those flavors is free,
- one of those flavors can be tailored to your needs specifically,
- one of those flavors doesn't leave you with a hangover, or an over sized bill if you use it too much.

That flavor is linux.

------------------
Now adding some nice funny illustrations to that.

4. Use Cars for Comparisons:

Vista PC: An Edsel with a Global Positioning System dashboard;
Mac: A BMW sale-priced;
Linux: Two cars: First, a 1932 Model A with a 1963 327 Chevy V-8, fuel-injected, and turbocharged, lakes pipes, drag slicks; Two: A Maserati in the shop, where techs and engineers are experimenting with VTO capabilities (Vertical TakeOff and Landing).

That's Linux.

5. Oh realy, after 3 years of amigas incompatibility problems I stay with the mainest of mainstream os systems, and free well it came with the computer so it was free too :P
i switch too Linux if its technically supirior and stable.

6. (I use Windows XP Pro most of the time, but do use Fedora 8 to scan... maybe in the future I will use Linux more? Anyhow, since I don't use it enough I don't have all that background to support it in a commercial, though I could learn, and I don't like spending tons of work on something if someone else's work will probably be selected.)

7. Sounds like a fun little contest. But still I wish people did their homework, and looked into more solid reasons to use Linux, rather than being swayed by clever advertising, mac, PC or Linux-biased alike.

8. I have this cool idea for this linux commercial, but it would take such an unbelievable time for a one man crew to do. Maybe I should write the script down first and go to story boarding.

9. I would try, but I suck at animating. sooooo, good luck.

ps: Ben Dover should get (temp?) banned. Hes been trolling for a little while. though I just fed the troll -.-

10. More on that car script: A young couple is walking through a user-car dealership, and there's a separate salesman for each type of car (OS). The Microsoft Vista guy is all shiny suit, sweaty, and nervous. He takes the couple to a 1958 Edsel convertible, and tries to sell them on the Global Positioning System that has been duct-taped to the dashboard. The couple declines, and next a middle-aged saleswoman walks them over to a used BMW hardtop. Nice, clean, lots of features--still under warranty--but pricey for our couple. They are about to leave the dealership when a young hep dude waves them over to see what's in the garage. The couple are introduced to a 1932 Model A Roadster, hot-rodded early 60's style. The dude says it's practically a give-away, if you can fix it yourself. The man in the couple is nearly drooling at the possibilities, but the wife pulls him away. Finally the dude whispers, 'Come on over here and see what the hardcore gearheads are doing'. They walk into another part of the garage, and a mechanic is testing the VTO capabilities of a rebuilt Maserati sports car. Up it goes, and lands without hardly making a sound. The dude looks at the couple and says, "Well, what do you think? By next year, it will be bargain-basement priced!" The woman pats her tummy and says: "If next year it's child-safe, we'll think about it." Pan over to the male of the couple, who gulps in surprise.
Voiceover: "Linux can make your dreams come true, and then some."

11. If it wasn't for XP, Microsoft future would have been very bleak. Even though they dropped XP, many use it still. Vista and the upcoming we-still-plan-to-suck-even-more 7 won't stop the penetration of Linux as an alternative OS.

12. Shouldn't be too hard. Don't even need sound, since it's been broken down to hell on Linux for ages.

Mac: Hey PC, can you help me fix my sound on Linux? I can't seem to get it working.
PC: Same here. I guess we can do without.
Linux: WORKS FOR ME, you guys must be idiots!
PC: Mac, can you help me get my printer running?
Mac: Sorry, looks like this model isn't supported yet and ...
Linux: WORKS FOR ME, you guys must be idiots!
PC: Turns out, if I want Linux to do anything at all, I have to install WINE! What a piece of shit.
Linux: *reads the GPL out loud*

Yeah.

13. What's really funny is that almost all of the commenter use or like Linux. And the two or three yell about how they hate it. I can't really draw too much of a conclusion from that, so I'll allow you to.

Personally I use Linux for a few reasons:
Linux is great for coding, so I use Linux.
Linux is great for Blender, so I use Linux.
Linux is great for browsing the web, so I use Linux.
Linux is great for typing up documents, so I use Linux.
Linux is great for watching movies, so I use Linux.
Linux is free, libre AND gratis. So, I use Linux.

14. Great contest, I would participate but team work isn't encouraged and Linux is also about community.

For enchanting your ideas OPEN LIFE by Linus Torvalds.

P.S. If I'm wrong about team work, I would gladly join to help with modeling, texturing, sharing ideas ...

15. I'm unsure if this is a good idea or a waste of time. Linux is not an operating system and its goal is not being on everyones computers, its goal is to be good kernel, and it is already a great kernel and it seems to develop well. On the other hand, more users mean more pressure on the hardware manufacturers for better drivers. But I think I would leave it to the distributors to make Linux advertisements.

16. Great idea, MiaMia

I'd like to help in a teamwork way also, but I'm busy fine-tuning a MakeHuman mesh into a full Blender rig. Nobody on the net has a completely free, fully-set-up human model yet, available for download. Lip-syncing is way harder than the tutorials suggest--only Preston Blair and Gary C. Martin give the full warning--and I'd be glad to donate a complete Makehuman Eurobabe model to the contest, if you enter it. In about a week, when she doesn't keep biting her lower lip when she pronounces consonants. As for my car analogy, there is already a 1932 Model A coupe model that is free.

17. Um, hate to break it to you miamia, but Linux *IS* an operating system, and you haven't been paying too much attention to the likes of Ubuntu, Novell, Asus, et al, now have you?

18. so if I read this contest right... it says that this is a TV advertisement... but is it really going to be on tv?

19. @vidrazor
Technically, Linux is a kernel, not a operating system. GNU/Linux is the operating system. I still usually just call it an operating system though.
I don't really see how it would be a bad thing if Linux got popular. As miamia said, it would mean that there would be more people to develop it, and it wouldn't hurt for more people to use it.

20. Mac: Hi, I'm a mac.

PC: And I'm a PC. Oh, hey mac. I see you have a UNIX based operating system.

Mac: Oh, yeah, its really nice. Works fast, and is easy to use. I see you have Windows Vista.

PC: Oh, no. That's just my theme. Let me change it.

Mac: Um... Now it looks like you're running OS X. Is that legal?

PC: Oh, I'm not running OS X. It's Linux.

Mac: ???

PC: Yeah, Linux runs on Macs also, you know. It's a UNIX-like operating system with great memory management.

Mac: Oh, well, OS X is really easy to use.

PC: Yeah, but you don't have many choices. And, with distros like Ubuntu, Linux has really become extremely easy to use.

Mac: Um... Ok... *tries to sneak away*

PC: Oh, and I also excel in networking and web hosting.

...

And so on. Eventually PC scares Mac away with technical information. And Vista shows up once on a wheel chair, retardedly saying "Durr Durr".

21. Linux is the be-all and end-all to OS's. Any devout user knows that. So why not show your support and win a trip to boot?
Its good enough for the NSA FAA and a few other large organizations. So much so that people are ripping open-source projects like BSD, modifying the UI slightly and making a killing off it *cough[Apple]*.
Its for the people by the people and those who seek or believe otherwise, get a life.

22. I bet the car buyers looking at that Vista Edsel are going to wonder where the steering wheel is. It's simple! You have to push the "Extras" button and bring up the gps roadmap, where you can designate your destination on the overhead map of North America (Europe and Australia are a special order, other continents availability may vary), and then patented MS TripZoom tech will innovate the best route and drive you there. If you end up driving through some angry farmer's cornfield, just push "Extras," select advanced options, then "Open the emergency panel," and when that pops open (after you say yes to the "Are you sure?" prompt) you just have to push the "reroute" button. Maybe do that a couple of times. DO NOT PUSH THE IDENTICAL "DEROUTE" BUTTON RIGHT NEXT TO IT. You'll be back on the roads in no time, I usually am!

(Microsoft Windows: It Does That Sometimes.)

23. If you're going to do an 'I'm Linux' commercial, make sure the other two introduce themselves as 'NT6' and 'Mach/BSD'.

Linux isn't an OS. I'ts just the foundation of Ubuntu.

24. @pixelLord

"modifying the UI slightly and making a killing off it *cough[Apple]*."

LOL that is SOOOOOO true! Windows may have its issues but at least Microsoft wrote it on their own.

25. "LOL that is SOOOOOO true! Windows may have its issues but at least Microsoft wrote it on their own."

Are you sure about that?

Linux is open source. I wonder if there is any Linux code in Windows...

I'm sure there is Linux code in OS X, judging by where they got THEIR kernel from. And, I bet Compiz would have saved Microsoft a lot of time in getting the 3D effects right. So, maybe...

26. eccs,

"LOL that is SOOOOOO true! Windows may have its issues but at least Microsoft wrote it on their own."

You might want to look into that a bit further. M$ has not been known for innovation as much as buying up existing technology.

You make Bill proud :)

27. Linux is just like a mis understood snake. Sure it takes more knowledge to use and is intimidating to those who don't understand, but in reality it is free, easy to use, offers more customization and has many different distros to meet your needs. If your reading this you most likely use Blender which is open-source. Guess what... SO IS LINUX!!! I don't see why you would want to use Linux, honestly if you don't use Linux tell me WHY!

28. so I had a great idea for a commercial (absolutely brilliant), but then something occured to me... if the linux foundation isn't spending money on a commercial... how is it going to actually be on tv...? then I thought, how much energy should I put into a commercial that might just be on the internet for no one to see...

29. Master Letch:
And so what, if it isnt on TV!? O.O

People dont want to watch TV anymore anyway (yes they do, but there are way more viewers on the internet, plus its worldwide)...

30. thats a misconception, people are still watching tv (mabey not you, but people less computer oriented), you can tell by how "out of the loop" most people are about internet fads... tell me the last 60 second commercial you saw on the internet....

31. I'm a PC... I tried linux* for ONE day... and whats the conclution? It was a love to surf internet, see movies, hear music, automatic updates, no virus, no more invaders on ur pc while online...
*Ubuntu Hardy

but wait... I CANT download apps and double clic--> install wizard? that imperceptible detail that make life easier are the reason I go back Windows XP the next day...

(P.S.: sorry but I still no found a distro "that makes all windows do" with all those little BIG features so transparents to the user and to the coders too apparently...)

remember I'm a PC and I have almost all the market; so everybody expects something iqual or better than what I can do... all the apps I run and all the HW I support... U FORGET SO EASY... even MAC can't do what I do (just with a VM)
