Blender, BBB in 2008 CG Retrospective!

17

Blender and Big Buck Bunny have made the 12th place of the annual CG Retrospective! Their description is touching:

Here is a wonderful example of technical and artistic selflessness that in fact built this industry. Well done guys, thank you.

A heartwarming, well-deserved praise for everyone involved! Check it out here.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Please, Blender Zealots - undertand this list the right way=P For instance, if a Blender event is ranked above, say a C4D event, it doesn´t mean that they think Blender is better than C4D. It just means that the event in itself is more noteworthy. I.e, the release of a totally opensource movie that doesn´t suck total ass, is more interesting than an incremental release of C4D - from an industry perspective - see? It also doesn´t mean that BBB was better than the other movies and shorts placing behind it (c´mon now=) Get some friggin perspective, peeps!

  2. Somebody's a pissed off C4D Fanboy...cough...Vainqueur...cough...
Congrats guys! That spot was definitely earned!
    Merry Christmas!

  3. Magiciandude, don't be a blender fanboy ;) Vainqueur does have a point. It's amazingly nice to see blender and BBB on the 12th position on the list, but it's all about context and perspective. The same way that Autodesk + softimage got the first spot doesn't mean it's the greatest thing in the industry right now....most of everyone over at cgsociety thinks it's bad for the industry. It's just because it was a HUGE event.

But yeah, as they stated, while we see Autodesk buying every other 3d related company, Opensource software like Blender give a damn good alternative!

  4. Heh.. I don´t even use C4D=P Have tried it though. Prefer XSI myself. Again you failed to see this in the proper perspective, and reacted as a Blender (or OSS in general) zealot would - thus proving my point..

though I haven´t been very active in the Blender community as of late, I am a big fan of Blender. Even contributed with a quite popular tutorial a couple of years back (still get e-mails to this day about that one, which gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside=) and Blender development is something I follow with great excitement. However I do feel that the fanboy attitude that is sometimes present in this community is working against a wider acceptance into the wider 3D community.

  5. @Vainqueur: I think you have a valid point there; I'll give this issue some thought and see how we as BlenderNation could contribute to a less fanboy culture.

*quickly hides his Macbook Pro* ;-)

  6. @ysvry: hardly! There's a difference between liking something and being a fanboy; fanboys don't accept criticism of their beloved product. I curse Blender on a daily basis ;-)

  7. Good news. It is always a pleasure to see well desserved comments about the Blender foundation work. Congratulations !

Merry Christmas Bart ! Merry Christmas everybody !
