The Guerilla CG Project: Free Professional Video Tutorials

22

The Guerilla CG Project has published an initial set of extremely useful and well-produced videotutorials, demonstrating general CG techniques. The videos are produced by acclaimed animators: Andrew Silke (Happy Feet, Scooby Doo, Cane Toad), Glen Moyes (famous Blenderhead! - coming soon), Greg Petchkovsky (Farscape, Crocodile Hunter, House of Flying Daggers) and Jake Hempson (character artist at THQ - also coming soon).

From their website:

The GuerrillaCG Project is a free non for profit organisation that hopes to make it easier to learn high-end computer graphics.  We are building a team of volunteers to create videos, that describe in an easy and understandable manner, the fundamental concepts of computer graphics.  Because core concepts rarely change with time, these videos have the potential to teach for many years into the future and help thousands of people all over the world.

Watch. Now. And don't come back until you've seen all their videos.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Excited to see more! We already have plenty of software-specific tutorials - I'm glad people ( experienced people at that )
are making more universal tutorials, that aren't likely to get obsolete.

I've already learned a few things from Glenn Moyes' Apricot animations, so I'm especially looking forward to his tutorials.

  2. It looks like its going to be an awesome tool for beginners and advanced users alike. I can wait to see what other tutorials they come up with. I noticed that the blender section is pretty slim on tutorials at the moment. We definitly have to change that, lol.

  3. This looks set to be a great resource, kudos to the people that set it up. I like how they (plan to) show the concept for the general principles, in different programs. Also, if people haven't seen the short "Cane Toad" that Andrew Silke made, they should check it out, it's good for a laugh.

  4. Doens' t matter if you can' view the video's.
Just look on vimeo on modelling a female head, from Micheal ......
    33 minutes long.
That is the most valueble part of it.

  5. Even if they're basic tutorials, they're depicted in a really awesome way. They are beautifully designed, explained very clearly and go straight to the point. Even if you already know all of this, it's a pleasure to watch them.

Now, I'd really like to know why the project name is Guerrilla and the mascot is a gorilla. The word "guerrilla" hasn't anything to do with gorillas. :-)
