After the delay of Yo Frankie a new bug fix version of 2.48 (2.48a) has been released.
"A couple of important bugfixes has been done in Blender since the release, especially for using the Game Engine and GLSL."
Theres a nice long list of bug fixes which you can read about here.
And of course Blender 2.48a can be downloaded from the Get Blender page on blender.org.

Where is the 2.48a update for Windows 64 bit?
2.48a does not need any special MS-Librarys more!
weight heat dose not work well,i tested my file armature on 2.46 and 2.47 and it work fine, except in 2.48
version. Ok whats missing here?
Shame on you Blender Foundation! You have forgotten to purpose a new release log for the blender 2.48a!!:D
@midije: our win64 builder hasn't been around to create the build. I'm sure that we'll get one when he's among the living again.

Well, the following link is a somewhat crazy post with all the P.S.'s, but here's what I wrote concerning the news that a new version of Blender, Blender 2.48a, has been released:

P.S. I haven't downloaded Blender 2.48a yet, so I can't give a review... :D God bless.
no official Vista x64 build :(
Continuing the tradition I see :)
Just want to say i LOVE the basics of blender's UI. It is pure genius.
I haven't been able to try 2.48 because I get a garbled screen if I use anything other than "No DRI", which comes with most linux packages of it, but since I haven't seen any 2.48 packages for Mandriva, and I do not know how to achieve "no dri" myself, I am missing out at the moment
Blender is not showing installed python with 2.48, anyone else?
Nice update, but I am back to 2.47 whenever I have to UV map anything (which of course is almost every model I make.
Who decided that "Draw shadow mesh" was no longer needed? Bad decision...
The rest of it is great, I like some of the new modifiers in particular.
@XYZ I had a problem with the permissions for the bake files get messed up, happened on Vista for sure, probably on Linux too.
Thanks for this update! ^^ But sadly Suzanne the monkey wasn't fix :(
I would so like to use GLSL shaders, but still the ATI and Blender don't like each other. Does the Blender use some odd extensions or what?
there some small bugs in 2.48a,so 2.49 is near and please add the Ocean and other submitted path this time.
Thanks for the grease pencil! It will help my animation workflow to be faster and easier. A really nice update! Blender keeps getting so much better every few months.
"""Blender is not showing installed python with 2.48, anyone else?"""
in case you use 64bit blender you also have to use 64bit python. maybe that's the reason?
I've had to reinstall 2.46 because I couldn't save any blend files using 2.48a (Vista 32) - is anyone else having similar problems?
Update: Please ignore the above post, I've chosen "Run as Administrator" via the shortcut - this seems to be the solution.
Only windowed mode in 2.48a 32bit & 64bit linux & windows versions.
Yafray not working with 2.48a. No Python for Blender 64bit windows version.
particles wont work her too!
