A brand new version of YafRay was released last week! After a long time, the most expected YafRay 0.1.0 is available to download. This is a complete rewrite of the renderer.
The new release was expected to be available only with Blender 2.50, because of the Render API. But, the develop team was able to create a way to integrate YafRay with Blender using Python. So, go download your copy of YafRay 0.1.0, or should we call it Yaf(a)Ray?
If you want to know more about this new released, there are two great places to start:
Have fun!

Oh wow, that is some good work from the Yaf(a)ray team. That example image is stunning.
Oh crap... I was sooooo hopeful there would be SSS in this yafray! Darnit. Well... Guess I'll be waiting another 30 years for that...
sebbon,
That image is very old.
hmm the website says the image is new but I know I have seen it around for years
The EXIF of the image says September 2007 and program used was Photoshop CS.
Go figure...
I have a similar image, from a different cameraview (a wide shot), from February 2007.
Many thanks for the new Yaf(a)Ray!
About the image: it is "Magic Bullet" by Enrico Cerica, one of his awesome renders made with Blender and Yaf(a)Ray. It's not new, but still one of the best I've seen. BlenderNation had a news item about a making of some time ago: http://www.blendernation.com/2007/09/28/making-of-magic-bullet/
WAHAHA, excellence! :P
I can only see that there's "Yaf(a)Ray Ubuntu AMD64 r282'..
No 32bit version?
I've always liked that magic bullet image, regardless of how old it is :D
Any chance of a 32bit Ubuntu build ?
wonder if there will be a Portage ebuild soon. I'm already waiting some time for that to happen, as I'm really really lazy and don't want to compile yaf(a)ray myself... again ^^
So how do I get it working with Blender?
no SSS? are you sure
pretty awesome
No universal binaries for us with PowerPC Macs? :(
@blendificus
Um... no... there still isn't any SSS support in yafray.
This is so great!
I was worried about yafray.
Why exactly would someone pick yaf(a)ray over BI when the BI feature list surpasses yafray?
I'm sure someone might want it if their coming from another package and they use yafray...
but setting blender materials is kinda... blender 101 isn't it?
Superb release! Thank you!
Avid: Wanna battle still-images? I'll pick Yafaray and you pick BI ;)
YAY!!!!!! Yafray Goodness!
Congratulations on the rewrite - Can´t wait to try it out! I´ve really missed the work done
on this Engine - Yafray was (and were) the hope of "The opensource Mental Reyes)"
The "PRO" option many of us loved to use when the original renderer couldn´t cope,
then Yafray where our no1 Backup - saving the day - every time!
THANK YOU!!
OK... I've installed Yaf(a)ray and the QTLIBS package for Windows 32 bit. Now I'm trying to render with Yafray... does it just take a (really) long time? 'Cuz even a cube seems to be a black screen for an unbearably long time...
I think I'll wait until it is implemented in Blender, not in Python.

I'm sorry Yafray but I can't do this again.
We said our goodbyes some 18 months ago.... and as you know there were many tears. But we parted our separate ways to never speak again. After a great deal of searching (and some no-strings-attached love on the side from BI) I found a new love... Indigo.
Sure it took us a while to sort our differences but now we are just great together.
Then out of the blue you come to steal me back again! This isn't fair Yafray, THIS ISN'T FAIR.
This has been a really long awaited release. I guess the YAFRay team has been going through a lot to get the new version (or program) ready for release. Now if you'll all excuse me, I have some rendering to do.
speaking of Indigo, has anyone noticed the indigo website has been down for a while. I was hoping to download the latest version and some tutorials (I haven't used indigo in a while) and haven't been able to get on their site recently. Anywhere I can find the latest version somewhere other than the Indigo site?
hi guys thanks for your kind words!
I hope this is the beginning of a new era for the yaf(a)ray project, and I hope it will be at least as good as the one we leave behind if not better.
First of all the yaf(a)ray project is alive thanks to some stubborn people, the bigest stubborn of them all is Mathias Wein, aka Lynx3D.
I would like to thank him for hosting his ideas and his project in the yafray.org comunity instead of starting a new project on his own.
And many thanks to the Blender Foundation, for this years of keeping the YafRay engine as an alternative for Blender users.
And many thanks to many people who has collaborated and keeps doing so: Jandro, eeshlo, Luis, Chronoh, pmartin, Cobas, ZoltanPL, Kam, Claws, oort, Xray, Jens Verwiebe and many others. We don't forget you!
And thanks to all yafray users.
*and thanks to Bert Buchholz, python and volumetrics expert and Boiko, the QT libraries guru.
YafRay 0.1.0? It seems that we can get 1.0 in 2045. Can't wait ... ;)
woot?? a list of features pliz!!!
@Xtra, that sarcasm is not fun at all. Have you paid something? Have you ever done a donation for the software you use? Are you able to give your contribute to speed up development? I'm sure the answer to all these questions is "NO", so give us a favour: shut up ;-)
