Site improvement: Threaded Comments

40

Update: after trying this feature for only a couple of hours, it was already turning into a big mess. I found it impossible to follow the discussions or to easily see what the latest comment was, the email notification broke down and the nice, clean look of the site was completely gone (see this screenshot - brrrrr). Thanks for everyone for helping me test this, but it's bye-bye threaded comments :-)

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

How about adding different shades to each level of comment or something, or 2 shades, one for odd threads, and the other for even?

  2. Nice Work Bart, your next mission is to fix the sessions of logins, i feel im having to re-logging in all the time even though i have cookies enabled and clicked the sexy "Remember Me" box XD

  3. The screenshot looked ok to me, but I see why you might consider it a mess.

Ideally it would be possible to select the kind of view you prefer, even change it dynamically from a select box. I'd search for plugins that provide that, but I'm kind of busy right now :/

  4. Ah, at first when I read the topic, I thought "Oh no, threaded comments always seem so messy", so I'm glad the idea is already done away with. :)

But still cool you try out new stuff, Bart.

    Try http://js-kit.com/

Simply add a couple of lines of javascript in your post loop and it works like a charm.

It is threaded, fast, and easy to customize. It also auto-syncs the comments in your WordPress database so you can get rid of it and lose no data.

OMG, this is turning into a MESS! I'll see if I can improve the layout, but this is even more confusing than it was before :-)

Maybe a "quote" button would work better than nested replies... that way the post to which you reply can be copied into your post, shaded differently, and maybe indented or italic or something... That way, if you want to know what the original post said, you don't have to scroll back up the list to find it, but you can tell it's a quote, so you can ignore the quote and only read the new part.

All I'd ask for would be an automatic way to remove existing quotes from a post you're quoting... Anybody who's ever used a message board can tell you why.

Okay, how did he do that? ;)

Oh, I have a magic button on my keyboard. It's awesome.

I actually just used a little HTML; the "blockquote" and "i" tags. But a button would be easier, and a way to avoid quote pyramids would be a necessity.

Good riddance. Also, cool that blockquotes are supported. I'm going to do that a lot from now on :D

  9. @Anthoni_C: I don't know - the confusion would still be there I think. Ton said: 'the nice thing about the current list is that you only have to look at the bottom to see what's going on' - I think that was spot on.
