Apricot, Blender, Beer & Thai Food

32

Last night I went to Amsterdam and met Ton Roosendaal of the Blender Foundation / Blender Institute and Pablo Vazquez of the Apricot/Yo Frankie! project, Carsten Wartmann of BlenderBuch fame (and an old NaN colleague), and Frank van Beek, who is one of the founders of NeoGeo and an old NaN colleague. I still have a headache!

Beware: this movie is 26 minutes long :)

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Hey, nice video. Thanks for answering my question, really cool.
Good to hear more information about the current development situation in the Game Engine.

    DingTo

  2. Nice video. I really like Ton's concept that artists should make games and not developers. I think that goes a long way toward making the development tools usable.

  3. nice and fun to watch.. not boring like the traditional studio interviews

    "blender never sucks!" yay! :)

    13:40
    Bart: "just killing, maiming, raping"
    Ton: "maybe, maybe" XD XD

best of luck to apricot and blender teams (and crystal space ;))

Awesome! Loved this "walktrough". It was pretty enjoyable, thanks for the sidewalk Bart, its like being there.

  5. Very nice interview, it was good to here about Artists making games not developers.

That thought process is becoming much more of a focus in game development overall
but still the biggest problem remains, we have so much trouble when we make assets
and animations in most DCC tools so it is not just Blender or the Game Engine of choice.

We can't move our assets from the modeling tool into the game engine without much pain
and suffering. I am hopeful that in the near future that will change.

  6. My goodness is JC in the game? My vid ended at 19:27 for some reason so I'l never know. :( Big Buck, we luv u!
    :D

  7. Excellent interview! It was nice to see Carsten there with you... sounds like an interesting secret project he's working on. I'll definitely be looking forward to that. The future is sounding bright for the Blender Game Engine.

This was a REAAALLLY GOOOD GREEEAAAT VIDEO.

It was awesome thanks and go go game engine go go go!!!

  9. yeah tons last line was a really good one and it makes a lot of sense, its about artists not developers. It is kinda nice to see a lot of things in the industry going that way, like the TES editor and the Sandbox2 editor, both of them are very artist friendly.

  10. Very insightful video. Thanks for posting it Bart!
Its good to hear answers to the many questions, straight from the main people involved.

Good to see you all had a good time as well, plenty of beer i see. You can never have to much beer. :)

  11. hey! it wasn't _that_ bad after all, thought that the audio-wind-mycrappyenglish might make it sound horrible, but seems that the camera is very good.

glad to see that people like it! because is much more comfortable this way than in a quiet-silent room looking at the camera.. hope to see more videos like this, very enjoyable

nice to see you again bart, but wait, there is still next friday! :)

I loved this. I could actually understand Ton (big yay!!) and Venom, you were very funny (I love humor!) I liked the part when Venom said that the only team members left were "me, Venom and Pablo". I wish we could have one of these every week. Overall a very excellent video.

  13. great interview, im glad the blender game engine did get such a boost from this project.

  14. Nice video.. WHy don't you upload video on You tube so that we can download it :) This site don't allow downloading video via third party s/w :(

  15. Thanks for the compliments on this video, everyone! It worked out a lot better than I thought - I guess the secret ingredient to a nice interview is having a few drinks before you begin, eh %^)

@Shashwat: actually, if you create an account on Vimeo and log in, you can download the full 380MB quicktime original :)

  16. Thats too huge ! I have slow internet connection . Can you please upload the Video in Archive uploaded in free Media Sharing site like Media Fire.. I would be highly obliged if you do so :)

  17. The greatest interview ever! or maybne its just me after a few beers?
nah... cant be. it was fun, almost as if I'd have been there myself, almost. :)

  18. @Shashwat: that wouldn't make the file any smaller. Sorry, I don't have time to help you out with all that ;-) Just enjoy the interview as is!
