Full tutorials on how to use MOSAIC

16

Do you remember MOSAIC? The script that allows Blender to export 3d scenes, to Pixar RiSpec and related renders. At the web site Blender to RenderMan, the autor of the script has posted a full set of tutorials, showing how to use the script.

Here a message by Ted Gocek, admin of Blender to RenderMan, with a short description of the tutorials:

Recently the developer of MOSAIC has been writing full tutorials on how to use the python script, some of them step by step instructions. The new cvs version is more advanced, with more control over the RiSpec in a single script than any other script made before hand, making this the best option out there with the current release builds of Blender, Aqsis and Pixie.

There are 12 tutorials total, complete with screenshots.

If you want to check out the tutorials, visit the Blender to RenderMan web site.

  1. Very very nice... this way is a lot more affordable to get Blender into more complex pipelines, since one of the most powerful things of the Renderman spec is that one: detailed control on the rendering part of the pipeline.

Thanks a lot to the developer(s) of MOSAIC! :)

  2. Malfhok, there are free renderers available that use the renderman spec, like Pixie or Aqsis. You don't need Renderman to use MOSAIC.

Thanks to WHiTeRaBBiT for those tutorials. I already had a look at some of them, and while I haven't understood everything yet (it's renderman, after all!), those articles seem to be very good organized information full of useful stuff, and must have been lots of work to write. Thanks again!

  3. Bart,

Your buddy Lucas da Costa Danats is back!

MOSAIC looks very promissing. Now I just need a good year to learn renderman :)

  4. I just noticed that the page shows no images anymore and if I try to load one directly, I get a "bandwidth limit exceeded" message. So if you haven't seen this page with images, try again another day.

  5. These tutorials were not published on The Blender to RenderMan Site.
They are on The Blender to RenderMan Blog, which is part of a forum started by Ted Gocek a few years ago. The blog is for news of development and a number of developers are contributing authors. The site is a work in progress. Questions about MOSAIC, this series of tutorials or Blender to RenderMan generally, can and should be posted to either the blog or Google news group.

About three to four hours ago I posted a comment here explaining I was in the process of uploading the images to our Picasa gallery, as well as JPG images of each of the twelve tutorial posts. This comment has been withheld for moderation and as yet not appeared.

If you go to the sidebar of the Blender to RenderMan Blog to the section titled Blender to RenderMan Forum, you will see links to various parts of the forum, The renders and Blender 3D view images from the tutorial series are on the Picasa gallery titled MOSAIC Feature Ramblings, and the JPG images of the posts including the MOSAIC dialog images are in the folder titled files on the News Group.

N.B, the blog is intended to be viewed with high quality fonts and font smoothing/anti-aliasing enabled, and the browser able to view fonts below point size 12. It is recommended if you do not have them, to install Apple Garamond, (or Adobe, ITC or other Garamond), and Lucida Grande.
