Webcomic - Us the Robots

29

Rocketman has been working lately on an impressive online comic using Blender and several other open source programs. The comics follow a small group of robots, throughout several humorously entertaining sketches.

Rocketman writes:

"Everything is done exclusively with free software. The characters are modelled and rendered in Blender, with layout and speech bubbles in Inkscape and image editing in GIMP- all under a flavor of Ubuntu Linux. Hell, I even wrote most of the html code (poorly) in Vim!"

There are currently 19 comic strips and Rocketman updates the site every Saturday with a new page. You can check out the thread on blenderartists.org or go directly to the site. And dont forget to start reading from the first comic strip in the series!

  1. That's really quite good! I was afraid that because so much technology was used in making the comic, it wouldn't actually be funny. But it works.

I particularly liked the appearance of the Blender default cube in the plot (http://ustherobots.com/utr/8.html). I think it should be elevated to the status of a recurring character ;-).

Minor detail: I'd like to echo dandellion Kimban and suggest that the RSS feed link be embedded on every page, not just the front page.

  2. Heyyy... really good, im reading and reading... i can't stop :P ... nice to every strip are continuous, good way to introduce the characters... congratz!!

  3. Well I like it very much, too. :)

I only don't really like the speech bubbles - they are too creative and shiny and things like that - even if they perhaps similar like the style of the comic, i would prefer simple white bubbles with a black outline.

  4. Needs funnnnyy!!

I'm sorry but it needed to be said. I really want to see this comic succeed because it's looks very promising, but in order for it to be picked up by the public internet users it needs to be incredibly witty. I know you're still introducing characters so it's hard to crack jokes, but just saying anyways.

Google: PBF comics, Cyanide and Happiness & XKCD to check out some successful web comics, that made it big simply due to the clever writers :)

  5. sometimes the humor is great, often the humor is okay

i do think the camera angles, character poses and colors are really well chosen, that's what's keepin it real interesting to follow!

love to see where this leads..

    gdluck
