Blenderstorm Polls and Ideas

21

Blender users wonder where they can leave their feature request. Also, I have a feeling that there are some Blender developers out there who would be interested in knowing what the 'most requested features' are. Blenderstorm to the rescue!

Nathan Letwory [jesterKing] writes:

BlenderPildanovak and jesterKing have been working on a new service for developers and users through which they can communicate with each other about ideas, feature requests and so on, all combined with a cool way to vote!

The site is currently in beta stage, so features get still added and bugs fixed. But you register anyway, and start giving us your valuable input!

Of course, to make sure your ideas get good feedback, make sure you write Feature Requests over at the wiki and link them to your ideas. You can also link to discussions on the forums at blender.org. If you have a bug, you can link it to our bug tracker.

Blenderstorm is based on the great Ubuntu Brainstorm code, and adapted by jesterKing to work on MySQL. The great initiative for this service came from Pildanovak.

Nice work guys!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. "Also, I have a feeling that there are some Blender developers out there who would be interested in knowing what the 'most requested features' are"

you mean the ones "other than" nurbs and ngons (which i seem to manage just fine without) which have been popping up on lists since the Elyisiun days

  2. I've left my votes! XD

I'm glad theres somewhere for ideas and such... Kinda depreciated the bf-funboard.... If any of you know what the hell im talking about...

It is/was a mailing list for feature requests and so on so forth.

  3.
*enters request for 'Make Beautiful Animation' button*
Well..., in the upcoming past, this isn't a button... ;)

  4. @endi:
So pessimistic. Don't you think the developers will show a little discretion when choosing which requests to implement?

  5. Well, it probably isn't on many people's list but I was talking to the animator at the local planetarium last Friday. He uses Lightwave because he can render an image with a camera angle of 240 degrees. I tried it in Blender and could not quite get to 180 degrees. Otherwise he was very impressed with Blender, especially the new features in RC1. Does anyone know how to get past this small limitation of the camera angle?

  6. I had a small wish.... 3 BConf ago, shared with all architects... snapping... it's included (RC1)now beside the REAL cool stuff...
so, this IS a good platform for ANYone to post his wishes not searching around many forums/bugtrackers/wishlists and so on. So: let us all commit and let the judges (who do their job well) judge it ;)

  8. The only thing I'm not sure about is how quickly duplicate requests will pile up. The list is already long -- some people aren't going to read every post. Same time, it's nice to have a place to request features.

    @ByronK:
It's possible to set Blender's camera angle to greater than 360 degrees. However, the lens setting ceases to be accurate well before the 172.847 degree max setting... so I don't know how much use that would be to an animator who needs precise control.

  9. "The only thing I'm not sure about is how quickly duplicate requests will pile up."

Isn't that the point of this new site, for the developers to see which are the most requested features.

  10. @innactpro:
That's why we vote for requests; if there are two hundred votes for one request, it's popular. But if there are three versions of the same request, resulting in a ninety/seventy-five/thirty-five vote split, that request no longer rides the top of the list. Not to mention, that would be disorganized. But this is only my limited perspective, and as I said, it's nice to have a place to make these requests.

  11. When you create a request, it should be obvious when you write the new idea. After writing the new title you should be presented a list with possibly similar submissions. It is of course up to you, the user, to make sure it is not already submitted.

Naturally, we'll have more moderators (developers, and users that show commitment) that regularly tend to the idea pool - mark out duplicates, merge them etc. Normal users should be able to earmark such ideas too, but I just noticed a bug with the code. When I have it fixed, you should be possible to do so too, and moderators can then either merge or discard such reports.

  12. great ideer, i Think letting users and devs comunicate with each other, can bring about a better blender. nurbs could be improved take a look at rhino, I would like to see macro recording alla zbrush and maybe multi user so you can built together or teach through the web.

  13. Incredulous Yak on

Hehe, I accidentally read the first three words as "Blender uses wonder" and the rest of the sentence made no sense.

Now to request wonder x 2.
