Elephants Dream in 3D World Magazine's 'Indie 50'

tdw102dvd_cover.jpgI'd kind of decided to stop singing songs of praise for Elephants Dream, but this is a story I think I should share with you: Elephants Dream made it into '3D World's greatest independent animated 3D shorts: 1997 to 2007'.

Jim Thacker from 3D World Magazine writes:

Issue 102 of 3D World magazine, currently on sale, includes a DVD compilation of the magazine's 50 greatest independent 3D animated shorts of the past decade -- including The Blender Foundation's own open source movie, Elephants Dream. Elephants Dream joins such award-winning shorts as Sejong Park's Oscar-nominated Birthday Boy, Robert Bradbrook's BAFTA-nominated Home Road Movies, and The Tale of How, winner of the Annecy International Animated Film Festival's Special Distinction award. The films chosen for the disc span a huge range of genres, from Pixar-style comedy to abstract animation, mock-documentary and arthouse, and last over four hours in total.

The DVD also contains over seven hours of video training accompanying Weta Productions animation director Steve Lambert's special 21-page project on modelling, texturing, rigging and animating a movie-quality dinosaur; models and textures worth over $700; and a full copy of imageSynth, Luxology's texture-creation Photoshop plug-in, as sold for $99.

I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Ill order it, for some unknown bizzare mechanics of Finnish Tax, 3d world mag is in the shops here retailing at €14! in the UK its £6 or something, I don't think the exchange rate really fits do you?!

  2. Oh my gd! The Tale of How?? That was done by 3 Cape Town people, i'm studying animation in CT presently, what an inspiration!!

    Thank you!

  3. This is really well deserved. Congratulations to the orange team. I bet the new O Movie is also going to be great.

  4. "Unfortunately the issue is sold out."

Haha! I worked on that issue a bit ( well, I helped put the DVD together ). I'll recommend to Jim that he sends PR to blendernation more often next time i see him. Blendernation has a good record for crashing servers with news posts, and it seems, selling magazines... ;)

PS. There is some great work on the dvd, well worth checking if you can get a copy.
