Richie the Gecko - Free Rig

10

makinggecko3_large_thumb.pngRemember Gecko Animation? Jonathan Lax decided he wanted to give something back to the community and so he's published a free character rig of their mascotte, Richie the Gecko.

Jonathan writes:

[...] whilst on other projects I made a very short little character animation to introduce my company mascot, 'Richie the Gecko'.

After receiving a few requests I've decided to release the character model .blend file as a download for the Blender Community. It is very simple but might be useful to anyone making a non-human character rig. Here the 'making-of' page I've just drawn up. This page will also feature soon a short tutorial detailing the use of the rig. In addition to this I've included the composite node setup I used for the animation and will also detail that in the tutorial.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Nice animation. I'll download the rig now, as I'm currently working on a short film involving a lizard... I'll see if I can get any tips from the rig on this guy.

  2. 4th time I'm 4th to comment? I'm absolutely not sure. :P

thx for the rig. that animation is also great, well done. I was thinking of releasing my own rig free too. wip pics can be see in the renderosity blender forum.

  3. nice rig, just a shame we seem to be missing the textures? the large nature of the file suggests we arn't but with my blender version (2.45) they don't seem to be packed in there.

  4. Friggin' spammers. Nobody spotted their test message back in August, now the bot's come back and verified that BN's spammable.
