Creature Factory DVD Teaser Posted

62

0131.jpgAndy Goralczyk showed an early teaser for his Creature Factory DVD last October at the Blender Conference in Amsterdam. The audience was wowed but the project remained a bit of a mystery for the rest of the community. Until now - Andy has posted the BConf video on YouTube. Enjoy!

Please keep in mind that this video is the result of some *very* early experiments. The final product may be completely different!

Q: Can you already give an indication when the DVD can be expected?

A: Unfortunately that's a bit unpredictable. as soon as I can find some time (probably after peach in late april) I can go back to recording and dvd mastering. but I dont quite know how much I have to re-edit the content... blender has changed quite a bit... some information might be outdated already. I need some quiet time to review everything.

Q: Do you have background information on the project somewhere (like what people will find on the DVD etc)

What I already have is a 5 hour time-lapse (hopefully with commentary) showing the complete creation of a series of blender shots from start to end. In addition there is a collection of in-depth tutorials about several aspects of the process, such as modeling, materials, UV unwrapping, lighting, compositing. All these are created with the intention to be used in a slightly larger scale project.

Over the last couple of months I also learnt a *lot* more... so I obviously would like to incorporate that into the collection. how this is going to happen, I dont know yet.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Great! I can't wait to see this one, it will be a great resource for all round stuff!

Congrats Andy and hope you end up with some time to finish it soon, I'll be getting it as soon as its comes out!

  2. Wow, that was very impressive!! Now I can't wait till it comes out! There was so much already in the teaser that blew me away that this is an absolute must have for me when it comes out! Good luck on finishing it!

  3. Wahnsinn!!

real great stuff Andy - thanks for the teaser already. It's always inspiring to see what blender can do, in the hands of the right persons.

  4. WOW! Can't wait. If this is a "TEST" then the finished product, even if it is different, will be trouser wetting AWESOME!!!!!

  5. Question: how do you do the glowing lines on your creature? I really need to know this :)

Question: did you make all the textures yourself, or do you have some sort of resource site, if you do, can you share it with us?

  6. [I found it amusing that on the linked site, after the video showed Mr Goralczyk going to all the trouble of compositing in blur, wobble, haze, glow and other reality-is-dirty effects, a comment complained that it looked good, but was, you know a bit blurred, wobbly, hazey, etc.. hehe]

  7. Well, I'm definitely gonna be buying this. I knew Andy had good artistic taste but I didn't realise it extended to his choice in music too. Adding Juno Reactor to any equation multiplies awesomeness by at least 200%.

  8. Love the teaser. Nice music to. Who made it???
If the finnished production is as amazing as this teaser that in will rock my socks off!!!!

  9. The music is the only thing I don't like in this video!
Well, and what I'm also not fond of: it's the old video, only shorter.
Andy, show us something new, please! :)

  10. "Andy, show us something new, please! :)"

@coodle: Andy'll show us something new on April 10th when Big Buck Bunny premieres. Until then I doubt he'll have any time left to work on his DVD! :)

Andy, you have no idea how envious I am of your skills. Fantastic work, as always. I'll definitely be buying the DVD.

  12. Awesome! Even those short animation clips with the creatures transport a lot of emotion already. Wish they were longer, I want to see more. :)
And I liked the music too.

  13. Mr. Andy Goralczyk is one of my Heros ;)
I would like to achive someday his modeling cleaness and quality as also render quality... but he keeps raising the bar :P

  14. I showed this at the art&technology strp festival 2007 (thanks Andy!) and people where equal impressed. Im looking forward to the dvd-rom, it's probably going to be a "must-have" for a very long time.

Sh*t!!! Oops, sorry. Oh, man. My heart beat really fast. I'm palpitating...

My #1 inspiration, sir @ndy did it again. Wow, really really really really really wooooow! *faints*

  16. @Bart: Haha, yes, that's a bad excuse ;)
You could almost think of a "Peach conspiracy", no one has ever seen real material so far, only one short sequence and pictures of it... I think they're working on something else, because even the Apricot team has shown more stuff of their game.

  17. Whoah... whoah... whoah... whoah...

    Whoah... whoah... whoah... whoah...

    Whoah.

That looks so amazing it isn't even funny. I want to learn EVERYTHING he did to create that thing. It's just purely amazing... look at the way it moves and lights up and look at the clouds and stuff...

    Whoah.

The music was pretty sweet too.

  18. Fantastic work. As a french user, I would love to see some PDF tutorials accompanying the DVD (it is often difficult to understand while listening english langage). It could help a lot. Thanks for sharing this.

  19. Wow, for all those proponents of high end priced 3D software, ..Put this in your pipe and render it!

Cant wait, for the DVD, Well Done Andy!

  20. wow, cant wait fo rhtis to come out!

this looks really good, but one questions,

in the timelaps teaser, it looks like ur edges on the model (in like model mode) are curved?? ive seen this before
but whenever i try my edges are always streight lines ( even when i subsurf) so how do u get these curved edges??

like what i mean is the it seems like a face, has 4 edges and 4 verteices, but the edges are a but curved!

any ideas? i wanted to know this for a while but never did ask

thank to all that could asnwere :)

  21. Lord of the Rings Junkie on

@Blendmaster: For the subsurf modifier, right next to the arrows you use to move it up and down in the modifier stack you will see a blank grey circle. Click it.

  22. @ Lord of the Rings Junkie thanks:)

i tired it but it seems kinda wierd

for example when i looked at it, it seems like i would need subsurfe level 6 to get it to look like the wireframe in the video (1:08 min)

it seems too fast to be modeled at subsurf level 6, is there something im missing??
