Matt Ebb, one of the lead artists on the Elephants Dream project, has been busy creating commercial illustrations using Blender.
Matt Ebb writes:
After the many months that these things usually take to get out of the pipe and into the public, here's a couple of illustrations that we did at work a little while ago for Kraft macaroni and cheese. These are probably on the packaging in the USA, but we're here in Australia so I've never actually seen the finished product. It's all Blender with a little bit of photoshop retouching on top. I did the shading and rendering, [while the]modeling and posing was done by the other guys here [at ProMotion Studios].
...we just did the print illustrations. I've seen some of the animated commercials and they're great...
...it's a well established character and brand - we didn't design it, we were contracted for this job to do a version of it for packaging. Of course we took great care to remain exact to the design/pencils as provided...
...[I used] SSS, plus ramps (ramps especially on the pasta bits). No AAO though, this was from a good few months ago, and I'm not sure if I'd want to use it for stills anyway. The spacesuit's using tangent space normal maps, painted in Zbrush, and a node material mixing various specular passes, including a fresnel material. The spots [on the character's nose]are part of the texture, on the 'official' character...

Very nice man! :)
(I'm an artist that has a decent earning by using only open source tool xD )
This looks really good. I'm doing to have to look for Mac & Cheese in the stores :)
I wonder if they put other flags on the Dino when they market to other countries.
Very well done! Congrats! I love seeing this type of news! It definitely helps to improve the impression of blender on the professional 3D community! Great work!
Yeah someone in the US take a photo or something. I'd like to see it on a box :P
This is wonderful and a great inspiration, that I will pass on to my students (and their parents.) I am going to be looking for it in the store, although I usually don't buy prepacked prepared food, I will buy it.
Sure looks like 'Dragon.'
Was this also made in Blender? http://www.kraftbrands.com/crex/
It's a flash presentation with the dino...
sweet!
this is cool - If I were designing it , though, I'd leave off the scratch marks on rex's left arm :)
@DreadKnight : its cool that you're doing artwork and getting paid for it... who hires ya? :D
It's the Cheesiest!! Great work. Someone should send him a box if the ever see one in the stores. I'll keep my eye out.
That's awesome. I just saw and went wow.
Top notch shading, mates! Where in Australia is your studio? I'm thinking about visiting down there some time.
@ bmud there's an address and a mop on there website.
Wow, awesome work! That's so cool that Blender work is on Kraft Macaroni and Cheese! Stuff like that is about as "official" as you can get. I'll definitely be keeping my eye out next time I'm at the store.
"I'd leave off the scratch marks on rex's left arm :)"
Those aren't scratch marks; they're wrinkles in the material, like you often see on inflatable swimming pool toys.
Great materials you've assigned to the mesh.
I think I gotta go to the store....
Nice, havn't seen any of this stuff here yet, maybe it will come some time.
"Was this also made in Blender? http://www.kraftbrands.com/crex/"
Whoever made that put the most annoying sound ever in! Booeep! Booeep! Booeep!
Well... I like the art but crappy food will be crappy food.
Ahah! Nice modeling and funny animation.
Well done !
Cool, thanks for the comments!
If you're going to resize that lower image though, please do it proportionally - right now it seems compressed horizontally, distorting the proportions, which is ironic just under the sentence saying it's exact to the design provided ;)
I did lower the image size (proportionally) because I noticed the distortion as well. It's width is being compressed automatically by WordPress. This is happening only on screen resolutions of 1024x768 or less. ;)
I'll set it so that the original-sized image is automatically thumbnailed by WordPress and the viewer can click the image to view it "full size".
Actually, I didn't resize the image at all (I was thinking of another article), its size is the original 606x615 so, WordPress is just scaling it horizontally. I'll resolve it as stated in my previous post. You're welcome.
that's a great image...
it makes me wanna start learning blender :D
Looked in the store... haven't spotted it yet. :s
Thanks Kernon, it's appreciated!
Hi.
Hoo Yes very good like illustrations.
I seen there site, cool,
hop to see more art work soon.
I Think Dinasours Are Cool :D
After looking almost everyday, I found it yesterday, for the first time. at the local Walmart here in Kingsport, Tennessee. I bought a bunch of boxes and plan to give them out to all my students and artist friends. I was so excited, I told the cashier the whole story!
Very nice ! I like it.
This photo is actually me....you don't want to see what i was doing with my other hand :P
