51hi6prr6nl_ss500_.jpgThat's right! Tony Mullen's 'Introducing Character Animation with Blender' has been translated to Japanese.

Tony writes:

I thought you might be interested to know that the Japanese edition of Introducing Character Animation with Blender has, at long last, come out. I'm really excited about this and I hope that it can help to promote Blender further here in Japan.

Folks who have been following FEDB's "Maid-san" thread over at BlenderArtists will recognize the great manga-style character from the cover. The Blend file for that character, by the way, is available with the latest issue of BlenderArt magazine.

The book is available from Amazon.jp. Congratulations, Tony!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

What? I didn't even know there's a Tony Mullen's 'Introducing Character Animation with Blender' in English.

ahh.. there's a 3d anime-esque maid on the book cover.. catered to Japanese audience.. good marketing strategy

  3. Is the title of this post in another language?
My browser shows only those odd little squares when a font can't
display a certain carachter. (I am using IE7 so it could be that M$ thinks i didn't pay them enough)

  4. It comes up fine in my browser (Firefox), but I guess having lived in Japan for 7 years a while back and having the Japanese fonts on my computer helps.

  5. That's all nice but when is his new book coming out? I've been trying to get it since January when amazon and said it was due out. Is there some way to contact him and ask him?

  6. Great news! I can only ask for food in German, so can't be of any practical help translating, but being one of the most up to date training resources we have it would be a boon to have it in more languages. Either that or maybe a fundraising campaign to get some more documentation/translation done for 2.5, 2.51 or whatever. (I know the Blender 'world' is fairly busy right at this moment)

  7. Hey everybody,

    Thanks for the comments.

@anomalous_underdog, yep, there's definitely an English version, which you can find at Amazon and also at the Blender e-Shop (and at fine bookshops near you, if you're in an English speaking country). There's no maid on the cover of the English version, but there is some great artwork. As you correctly pointed out, the maid was hopefully intended to help market the book to a Japanese audience. I didn't choose the cover art, but I did introduce the artist's work to the publisher. I think the maid is a fantastic example of toon shading, and really nicely modeled as well.

@Tom, the new book, about physical simulations with Blender, will be out pretty soon, thanks to the developers who put together the 2.46 release. In addition to things like fluid simulation and rigid bodies with Bullet, the new book covers a lot of new features, among others the new particle system, hair, and cloth, which are of course not even in the current (2.45) release. Originally I had been fearing that the book wouldn't be releasable until 2.5, since obviously it needs to correspond with some official release. However, thanks to the 2.46 features release the book is all ready to go and will be published pretty much immediately once the official 2.46 release is out. 2.46 is slated to come out in April, and then the book will hit the press. I'd expect it by June or even May if things go really smoothly. Just the other day I finished going over the entire book to make sure it's 2.46 ready. I'm really excited about this one.

Of course, I'll definitely be working on trying to encourage translations of the new book as well. Hopefully it'll be possible to arrange them to come out a bit quicker this time around.

  8. Thank you, Sir. I look forwward to the new book even more now. Good luck with it and your next book (fingers crossed). Take care.
