I am happy to announce another Blender Class here in Kingsport, Tennessee, USA. This class will be a weekly, continuing class on Wednesday evenings at the Renaissance Center, room 313. We will begin on January 9 and meet through the end of March. More can be found on the Kingsport Art Guild Website or at my site. There has been even more interest here in Blender since the Kingsport's First International Digital Art Show here in December.

Also I will be giving a free, two hour demonstration at the Eastman Employee Center, room 223, on Monday, January 7, 2008 at 9:30 a.m. for the Senior Photography Club.

For more information on these events feel free to call me at (423) 863-2864, or email me at byron[at]paraisoenterprises[dot]com .

In 2007, several workshops in Blender (in a total of seven editions, teaching modeling, animation and materials) were extremely successful. I recently got the go ahead to start preparing a workshop and 5 week course in Blender for Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. The workshop and class will most likely take in March of 08 and depending how they go will be offered again and possibly of more advanced classes being introduced.

To compliment the classes a website is in the works that will contain content from the classes which will be freely available to the digital arts community. From videos and desktop publications to a repository with textures and rigged characters. Minus the class being online all the material which will be used or created for them will be. As of right now it just has an add up for the workshop and class that will be offered in the Spring.

While the website is far from completion one of the first tips and tricks documents is finished and I figured why wait to share it. The .pdf can be downloaded. Any request or suggestions for other tips and tricks publications, video or anything else really can be sent to info[at]digitalillusion[dot]us.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Hi,
    Happy New Year 2008 !
this is intended to Andrew Pavlick,
the pdf file the URL of which is in this post is very very nice and I had never thought of this.
I would like to state that you could talk about : vertex groups (ex: one for each arm+forearm+hand, one for hand, one for fingers etc... or just create them when needed (when we know that we want to do several pauses) to avoid selecting same things twice.
You could also add an opening on the harmonics method to animate things with a low poly mesh around the actual mesh to pose.
    Sincerely

  2. Hey Andrew -- I'm based in Pittsburgh! I'd thought about doing something with the CMU or Duquense people and Blender, but the Center for the Arts is a much better match. Glad you worked something out with them.

  3. (For myselfhimself) I had thought about mentioning that as well, but at 12 pages I decide for now to stick to simply hiding and showing a single portion of the mesh. Although shoudl some more free time roll around I might add that into it.

(For harkyman) You're in The Burgh, awesome!!! While the workshops for now will probably geared toward high school students (Probably should have mentioned that) If the workshop and classes go well more classes will follow, along with ones geared for college students and hobbyist.

(For Vidrazor) Yep, .9 has the "Natural Pose System"... From what I can tell it works well. But aside from working from the basic human form, I don't think you can import your own modeling into for posing, IE, monsters, etc.
