Full Character Rig by Daniel Martinez Lara

23

red-nelb_screenshot.pngAnimator Daniel Martinez Lara has moved on from rigging a leg in Blender to rigging a complete character, and he's offering the first results of his work for download.

Daniel writes:

This is my first character rig in blender, named "Red-Nelb", is free to use it but currently is in version 0.4, which means that:

  • it´s not ready for production
  • it misses some standard features like Fk in Arm/Leg (now only IK), stretchy,
  • etc..

In fact, I´m working in a completely rebuild of Arms and Legs. So, use at your Risk!

"Red-Nelb" is a excuse to test and implement rigging concepts, in this version the focus is in to use the minimum controls in viewport without lost functionality.

You can download his from from his website, pepeland.com.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Speaking of Rigs. Just yesterday I finished watching those NY Blender conference movies and Bassam's little lecture was very helpful and informative.

  2. Hey, cool character! Nice and simple. I like it!
I've been doing some rigging at the moment too, and am having a great time with it.

Nice site too Daniel, and great placement of the secret movie by the way. I have a secret movie on the Movie page of my site, but I don't think many people know about it.

    Keep it up!

  3. Te he .... the name is Blender... in reverse! (The only reason I know is cause I've used that as well :) )

    Red-Nelb

Love the work by the way :)

  4. Great rig! I'm a little unsure about the finger IK, but it is a WIP.
I like how none of the controls 'get in the way' of seeing the character. You just click on the area you
    want.

Keep up the good work! I myself am trying to learn how to rig - I'll definitly consider this a tutorial.

  5. noobie, I believe its important to you, to learn more about lights and shadows @ wiki.blender.org

    About Pepeland Rig:

the FK that's lacking, I guess its just a mather to create a Driven key or something right? How can we do that ? Same was as driven shape keys ?!

  6. to drive the IK to FK is easy, the problem is that once you fully disable the IK, the arm jumps back to the FK which is most likely the basepose... maybe you can set keys based on IK first, then disable the IK? I've tried using the 3dcursor as the pivot, but unfortunately that doesn't work.

  7. Man oh man I was just using it again - I really like the way the head is rigged. You can aim and yet rotate the head with ONE CONTROL!

I just had to comment about that.

  8. cool little character! looks nice, easy and fun to animate, so far this is my favourite animation test character. thanks for this, and i second that tutorial video idea :)

  9. Cool. I'm wondering how he made it so you can't even select the character mesh. Cool feature, but I want to peek at it ;)
