BlenRig the Dwarf, Dancing

22

BlenRigJuan Pablo Bouza has finished a two-minute animation of his freely downloadable character rig, BlenRig, dancing to a jazzy tune. BlenRig is a nude male dwarf, so if you're offended by this kind of thing, well, go do something else :)

Juan Pablo writes on BlenderArtists:

HI all, well, I finished my first animation using Blenrig. Hope you like it. It's done in Blender, and ORB for the displacement map baking.

[...]

There many things that could surely be better, like the hair, too stiff. But I was in a hurry, I wanted to make it for the Siggraph call. By the way, I think I didn't make it.... Besides, I wanted to finish the animation and deliver the first BlenRig results to the community, and the rendering was really slow, so I decided not to mind about certain details.

Downloads (21MB XVID AVI):

It's an amazing piece of work. My only critique would be that after a while, the animation is a bit out of sync with the music and BlenRig's facial expression doesn't really match the dance. Apart from that, it's one of the smoothest and most natural character animations I've seen in Blender.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. where is this "freely downloadable character"? all which i see in the past story about this is a rig.

that made me thinking about how feasible it is to use a finished rig. i thought you first made the model and then set up the armature to fit it. my tries with simpler meshes (i haven't played with this one) resulted in unwanted rotations of some bones. the fact that it's fitted to a dwarf won't make things any easier IMO.

so, has anyone used this rig for his characters?

  2. really must agree - the smoothest animation I've seen in Blender, with proper weight, and for the most time truly believable - if you don't think of whats happening :)

  3. I must go and have a shower now. I feel dirty. Dirty.

Great animation. I can understand the little dangly reason why it might not have made into the SigGraph. lol

Shame it's only the rig that's available. Anyone managed to do anything with it?

  4. This is amazing! The character, the hair, the rigging, are all wonderful. Even the genitalia bouncing realistically. I think it is a masterpiece. Thanks.

  5. Why dosen't the drawf move at fast in the animation as when only the rig is showing - the rig alone seems funnier than the actual animation - but funny none the less ;)

  6. @Yaroukh: because Juan didn't provide one. We can't/won't upload people's video's unless they ask us to. Many people object to the quality of YouTube/Google video and they'd rather keep the material available in high-quality on their own site.

  7. @Bart: I understand. I just believe it is reasonable to ask them explicitely next time, you know, just to provide an alternative (especially when the YouTube has way faster servers).
    Just a hint.

    have a nice day

  8. Thanks!! Give me a few days and I´ll have it uploaded to YouTube, I´ll send the link to Bart.
I´m re-rendering a few frames to correct some hair issues. I´ll let you know when it´s ready.
