A few weeks ago the CG Arena has announced the winners from their challenge, and the big winner was Maciej Kotlinski, from Poland. The deal is that Maciej, used Blender and Gimp only to create his winner image called “Child`s Nightmareâ€.
Last week the CG Arena has published a Making of for the scene and an interview of Maciej, showing how he created his image, from the basic concepts to modeling and composition in Gimp. If you want to read Maciej story, just visit CG Arena.

wooooooooot!!!
it's so nice..
whoa! amazing! such a professional workflow!
Blender is da bomb!
Maciej, you're crazy:
You tell us, you're a total noob and do SUCH work O.o
and then, you claim, it's easy O.o.o.O
That's absolutely genius prowork (although, I wouldn't buy it. Basically, 'cause I don't like nightmares or anything related with them)
Great stuff. I hope, you'll show us similar (in terms of cleverness, not in terms of nightmarishness) pics, in the future.
I've been trying blender for more than a year. before nightmare I made only two or three basic architectural visualizations for my academy projects.
Nightmare was my first "bigger" or "real" 3d graphic project. I also have some experience in traditional art.
it's really nothing special, and it's really easy. you just need to know what you want to achieve, and be patient;)
On the contrary Maciej, it is something very special: it is extremely expressive, full of details that add meaning to culminate with the eyes.
I've been admirative of many Blender images: never have I been as much moved by one.
Thank you.
Jean
xD
That's both quite hard :P
itz a answer to my tl who kept on ignoring the possibilities of blender...
cool man!
~epat. :)
No doubt this is wonderful image and cgarena.com challenges and tutorials both rock. Thanks a lot maciej for explaining the image creation and thanks cgarena.com for organizing such a wonderful and inspiring challenges.
Two perspectives:
- Technically : wow. One word, one scream.
- Content-wise : the thing is done so well, it shows the child (speechless - mouth "nailed" shut) while the dad hits the ma. That made me go very very silent. This is a child's true nightmare. It's not (NOT - ya hear!?) all fun-and-games...there ARE children just like that somewhere, in way too many places.
Thank "..." that I dd not live this nightmare...and let's not forget the children that do live (or have lived) this nightmare.
All in all very very well done, just as true Art should do: tough, and if possible on multiple levels.
Well done...
thats creepy
that picture really hits me hard. i've lived that kind of nightmare and your image depicts it in its entirely horror. Great work!!! keep 'em coming!! and congratulations on your victory in the cgarena coliseum!
