Blender Smileys!

45

blender-smileys.pngThe French Blender community BlenderClan has gathered a fine collection of Blender-oriented smilies to be used on BB and forums. Here's a snapshot of their work.

These smilies are under a Creative Common license, meaning that you are free:

  • to Share -- to copy, distribute and transmit the work
  • to Remix -- to adapt the work

Under the following conditions:

  • Attribution : You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work)
  • Share Alike : If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same, similar or a compatible license.

The smilies are available in various format: .gif and .png and most importantly, in .svg. You are now able to pick a vector graphic software like Inkscape and build easily your own new emoticons (under the same license): a few of the smilies in the pack are very humourous, or close to private jokes, showing how easy it is to build a simple smilie.

Full credits go to the talented authors: riesseg, Traven, TSpawn, Vincent, Zelouille, Paul and Golem13.
Special thanks go to riesseg, for the original design and the very first .svg files he agreed to share, and to Traven who put a lot of effort in supporting this project, compiling/polishing everything, and even hosting the .zip file with all the smilies.

You now don't have anymore excuse for any dull or sad smilies that could be featured by your Blender-oriented forums ;-) These smilies have been built by the Blender community *for* the Blender community. Let's propagate them over the Web, and report any interesting new spawn to the authors, they will be pleased ;-)

I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Oh! And a blender-create-smiley-contest, to add many additional options for custom blendersmileys:

    4 Categories:

    -Best overall Smiley
    -Best Eyes
    -Best Mouth
-Best Additional stuff (like the Wings on the Angel-Smiley or the labels, that are held by some of the smileys)

    What do you think?

  2. @Bart: I forgot Golem13 in the authors... Could you please add him? Thanks!!!

@kram1032: lol ! a blender-smiley contest would be lovely, but are you sure you really need categories??? ;-)

  3. not really, but I'd like, to have those things separated, because of the possibility to remix them :D

(My inkscape skills are close to zero, but by remixing two smileys (ok, by remixing the parts of them) I've already got one more smiley :D )
    __
I love that design, it's very cute :)

  4. Ah, a category-split, that's more important:
    animated and still :D
Currently, there are no animated smileys...

  5. Does anyone know a way to get bigger smileys into MSN, than the default-size?
Those Blendersmileys are slightly too big... and get cut! why can't they get resized!?!?

  6. The smileys are really COOL and a FRESH BREATH! :)

That said...I have some graphics critique that might
be of help if you feel like improving the already very
cool artwork you have made here:

    - Be careful when working with artwork that will be very
small, therefor you need to consider EVERY PIXEL, you have
too much anti-aliasing on the small versions of the smilies,
thus it looks kind of blurry.

    - Also remember that there are certain "rules" to "beauty", when looking at your very fine work...you seem to need some
kind of consistency when creating the smilies such as... smilie facials - mouth and eyes should stay 100 % fixed even if they have various expression. And Balance is of upmost importance...such as...do not place pixels too close with the mouth or eye region...as it will work against the expression you try to create.

    - Remember to keep lines CLEAN, a smile should have a "perfect curve" rather than a "bulky" line on one of the sides...it will look more appealing if you keep a "clean line" when designing such icons as smilies.

Again - try to work on PIXEL level when you make the
small versions as you can´t just "dabble" with Anti-aliasing when things get this small...every pixel count, a small change in colour-tint will make ALL the difference on every account.

That said - the smileys absolutely ROCK! ;o)

  7. Thanks all for the funny comments.
It's great that you like our job, and see in website or in a msn's pack could be funny too.

I'm agree is you joOongle about the pixel work. But... i was too busy to did them with gimp, one pixel by one.
So if someone want did it, he can ^^

Same, if someone want creat a website or if blender.org want creat a part to the developpement of blender's art goodies it's very fun :D.

So let's propagate them over the Web, and report any interesting new spawn to the authors, they will be pleased ;-)

    thanks.

    - riesseg -

  8. Very nice!! It could be quite funny to find thos smileys spread across blender-related sites and forums.. A kind of "secret mark" :)
So you're back from holidays Bart? Hope you enjoyed. Welcome back!

  9. thanks for all your comments, they make me feel really happy :-)

    I have some comments too

    - if you want the smilies in a bigger size, i put the .svg file in the pack, so you have just to export the wanted smiley in the wanted size, there will not be any problem of aliasing

    - the smilies in .gif format havce been created specially for the forums of The Blender Clan, so i know there would be problems with the dark backgrounds. if your navigator can't work with the png pictures (with alpha canal of course) i've only one thing to say : use FireFox ^^

    - i know there isn't any animated smilies, but now, everybody can make them ^^

  10. kram1032:

To make big msn emoticons you have to use GIF animated format. It's easy to do with GIMP by adding a transparent layer and saving as gif. You can archieve emoticons of 32x32 in official msn and as big as the original image in others programs such as gaim.

  11. Adding Smileys to wordpress :D

    Turn on smileys

    Go to your Admin Panel
    Select Options > Writing
In the Formatting section, check the box for "Convert emoticons like :-) and :-P to graphics on display"

How Can I Have Different Smiley Images Appear?
    Simplest way:

Find your smiley image files in the /wp-includes/images/smilies directory and back them up to another directory
Note the names of each smiley file. Your files must match these names and should be in the same 'gif' image format.
For predictable behavior, the image sizes should be similar.
Upload your new files to the /wp-includes/images/smilies directory with an FTP program.

  12. just curios:

    > Attribution : You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work)

Does this mean, that if I put these smileys on a private webspace and use them anywhere on the net (forum message,...), that I am intrinsically required to put a link to the license file beside the smiley, if I dont want to violate the license?

  13. But, in the Zip file, there are proprietary Microsoft fonts and I think they can't redistribute these fonts... Licences must be respected !

  14. but the smileys, that are holding shields, don't need a font, any more, it's fixed in the pic...
...and you can get the authors permissions....

  15. humm Blendies ...... I love that, i think i will call them like this

for the problem about the fonts, i know it, i'm looking for a solution

    Enjoy
