Latest Blender Model Repository News

13

Sample model available on the BMRIt seems like every time we mention the Blender Model Repository here at BlenderNation, it's more bad news. That's why I'm so happy to bring you good news today straight from the fingers of Dion Moult, who is hosting and maintaining the latest iteration of the BMR.

Dion writes:

The BMR has recently been going through an upgrading process since it has shifted from being forum-based. I am happy to announce several new features that should give visitors a pleasant and easy method to download models.

A new registration system has been added, with added security. This will eliminate ID theft. Finally, categories have been added, such as plants, humans, characters, and architecture. Thumbnails are now conveniently placed next to each submission on the viewing page, thus allowing the user to scan through before looking at the images in more detail. A submission reviewing system has also be added, which allows submissions to be checked before confirmed suitable for the world to see.

Of course, there is still work to be done, including a cleanup of older models and adding thumbnails to those which don't have any, but the BMR is definitely becoming a reliable, popular resource that everybody can use.

Sounds like you all should go visit the BMR and test out these new features today! While you're there, don't forget to upload some of your dusty old blend files that you don't mind sharing, and check out some of the other neat stuff on http://e2-productions.com.

  1. The BMR needs more models....

I think the problem is, people who know how to make models don't go to sites like that....
...and the people who don't know how to model who DO go to sites like this think "I would upload some stuff to make the collection bigger but I can't make anything good enough to share... which is why I'm on this site!"

Well thats the problem in my opinion. But as I always say "In my opinion: Everyone's opinion is wrong. Including mine." ;)

  2. Would it be good to add stuff from the Elephants Dream there? There are some nice basic things, like jars and a table and a very nicely textured carpet, for example, not only crazy mechanical birds :) Oh and nice animated wire sockets.. I think the license is permissive so that anyone is free to upload from ED to e.g. BMR, given the attribution is put correctly.

Did someone start uploading already? Or does ED already work ok as a repository itself within the limits the material itself sets for reusability?

  3. A good working model repository and material repository are highly needed to broaden blenders userspace i think. So good luck and go on!

When the sites have stabalized, enough on site features and enough models/materials, they should be cross-integrated into blender so that you can easyly submit your models/materials and fetch them vice versa from within blender. Sounds alot like webservice and python eh? ;)

  5. The site looks good, but that advertisment in the top left hand corner is HIDDEOUS! I can't even close the damn thing. Arg. Nor move it out of my way to see the page links beneath it. Is it absolutely necessary??? Well, I know it is not. So I beg, PLEASE remove it or put it somewhere else at least. I don't care about the ADs but I do care about usability. By the way, I'm running Firefox 1.5.0.6

Otherwise, seriously, the site rocks. I definately put in my donation earlier while the site was going through it's ups and downs a few months back....It's worth every penny, even if I never use anything from the site! I'm sure someone else will.

Hmm.. I don't see any ads that I can't close.. Do you mean those ads that pop up when you move your mouse over the lines that have double underlining? I suggest that you upgrade your firefox to the latest version, which is 2.0.0.3. Then install "Adblock plus" and "Adblock Filterset.G Updater" from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search?q=adblock+plus&status=4

That will prevent those pesky ads from showing...

  7. Yeah, I would second the thing about ads. I'm running FF 2 and a lot of those things look like links to actual pages about logging in, or donating to them but are just pop-up ads. It really negatively impacts browsability.

  8. what about a blender internal browser, that's optimzed (not only using but optimized) to the bmr and blender.org and such?

would be a great thing :D

and maybe an own chat, or such....

    and, and....
some Mrd., that also come with installing blender and a car and a....

    ok, ok, I stop now.

    Great :D

  9. Looks really nice! Congratulations on a great new site! The menu for some reason likes opening up everything in new tabs, but that might just be me.

  10. Yep. My fault.. kind of. I use "Tab Mix Plus" and usually keep on "force open new tab" when a link accesses "a new site" which is supposed to work only when the domain changes. Their bug - not yours.
