Blender/Gimp Texturing and Unwrapping Tutorial

7

Lara Croft unwrapping tutorial imageSomebody that I've only been able to identify as "Oto the Cleaner" has provided the community with a good tutorial that is useful for any new 3D artists among us (edit: I have since learned that "Oto's" real name is Antonio Campos.  Thanks, Francisco!). The tutorial covers basic image projection theory, UV unwrapping, texture creation using the Gimp, and more.

I'd like to think that I know a little something about writing good tutorials, and this is one that no beginner should overlook. It speaks to the right audience, teaching both technical and artistic technique with good use of visual aids. The author appears to be proficient (but not entirely fluent) in English, and a few sections suffer grammatically because of this. However, this is no show-stopper. Instead, most of the sections are taught clearly and efficiently, and with enough detail that anyone should be able to skin the provided Lara Croft model in just a few short hours (or less). Furthermore, he has released all of the content of his site (unless otherwise specified) under the coolest license I have ever heard of: the IDCL (I Don't Care License).

While you're at his site, you might as well take a look at his full list of tutorials. This guy is apparently amazing. Thank you, Oto!

  1. Hi OTO,

I took a quick look at your fine tutorial. You did a swell job.

You can very easily further improve the readability of your work by using a little bit of type setting. Use flush left instead of centered text and use itemized lists where applicable, for example like this:

    - Red: Face and hair
    - Yellow: Boots, front and back pelvic area
    - Pink: Legs and arms
    - Blue: Outside and inside hands
    ...

    instead of:

Red - Face and hair Yellow - Boots, front and back pelvic area Pink - Legs and arms Blue - Outside and inside hands ...

I think you get the idea.

He is an oldschool underground master from elysiun and he is helping people for a quite LONG time. Please take a look at his website. It has another amazing tutorials. He is very active inside the game engine forum and a great friend.
