Siggraph 2007: Birds of a Feather

13

I just received confirmation from Ton that there will be a Blender Birds of a Feather [BOF] meeting at Siggraph 2007 in San Diego. There's not much info to share yet, except that it's on Monday, August 6th in Room 29A.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

    $Sigh,
As of yet, there isn't anything in New Zealand which remotely resembles anything like Siggraph.

It's a pity, because New Zealand certainly has a good base for the Computer Graphics and Games industry, with our Media-focussed schools such as the Natcoll institutes, as well as employment options by companies such as Weta Workshops (The people behind the effects of Lord of the Rings)

Oh well... I bet if there was, though, Blender would feature prominently ;)

  2. @Joe: check out the 'Related Links' under the article for a video of last year's BoF. That will give you a good impression. No training, but lots of interesting presentations both by the Blender Foundation and by Blender users.

@PlantPerson:I haven't heard anything about a booth yet. I also didn't hear that there will NOT be a booth, so I guess Ton is still deciding about that..

  3. @MOXAB, its not a free convention but they have multiple levels of admission, I think the lowest is a one day exhibition pass at 35 USD.

I have graduation on Monday so I guess I'll have to wait for what time the BoF will be held at. I really want to make it to and meet everyone!!

  4. @rpgsimmaster: there was one convention thing in welli once, called 3december, ages ago (2000, google tells me). Theres nothing on the website about about an nz one since, though trying to get anything about it out of the website (www.3december.com) is like getting blood from a stone. The closest thing we have now is semi-permanent, a design thing (not specifically tied to 3d).
NZ needs something like this so the students can connect to the industry, and hobbyists like me can geek out. :(
