Blender International Movies: Les Vepres de Sang (France)

16

05.jpgWell, my original intention to do a daily post about international Blender movie projects didn't quite work out due to some time limitations, but here's part two: Les Vepres de Sang by the French group Omnimedia-Jdr.

"Les Vepres de Sang" ("The blood prayers"): In 982, Gerbert d'Aurillac, a french abbot, wants to seal his destiny. Using the "Purdunamis" book, he succeeds to call the incubus and concludes a pacte with the devil. Gerbert d'Aurillac quickly becomes pope but he's betrade by his own vanity and by the false promise of the Shadow.

06.jpgThe following report was submitted by Anael Seghezzi:
"Les Vepres de Sang" is a short film created and produced by Eudes Menager de Froberville who is also the president of a French company called Omnimedia-Jdr.

During the summer of 2005 and 2006 I was in charge of the film production (story-board, animation, lights, render...), which was done during my school studies.

I have worked with computer graphic since 1999. Working with graphics I developed a big interest in adventure games and I decided to learn 3D. In 2001, I began my biggest project named "Maratis", a 3D game development tool that featured non-realistic 3D rendering. During studies in a French game school called "ENJMIN" (first French public game school), we developed a small 3D game with Maratis. The game "Le Jardin de Mirabelle" featured a “hand drawn” render style which was awarded for best graphic at the Imagina 2006.

07.jpgI discovered Blender in 2005 and was impressed with its capacities and features. When we started working on the movie "Les Vepres de Sang", I decided to use Blender. The difficult part on this film was to create a rendering with soft shadow on omni-lights and including depth of field. I solved the task by using 16 render passes (with motion blur) with a "micro move" on lights and camera position. Render time was a bit long, but this method rendered motion-blur, soft-shadow and depth on field at the same time.

08.jpgSix months later, we founded a game studio called "Studio Le caillou", with Eudes Menager de Froberville, Goran Vbrancic and Johan Spielmann. Based in Paris, Le Caillou is created in large part by ex-students of the first European school of video games (ENJMIN). Le Caillou is specialized in video games for different consoles and also develops serious games for the medical research area.
At the present, we are working on a Nintendo-DS game.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Really very nice and quite artistic. God atmosphere. Even with just tiny animation techniques (no complicated lipsinc, walkcycles, motion path etc.) there can be briliant results.

  2. I was really impressed, it was one of the best Blender movies I've ever seen. Great work. I wish I knew Blender as well as you do.

  3. Excellent movie! The style strongly reminds me of the video sequences in the 'Thief' Game Series - which btw. i really love! replace the abbot with Garrett the Thief and there you are: Thief - Deadly Shadows..

  4. Vassilios Boucer on

    Amazing movie!
I like the Candle- and the Hands and the Atmosphere in combination with Music!
    Very Mystic!
    Great Job!

  5. Great! I don't understand French either, but that's fair seeing as the English speaking world shouldn't expect everyone else to understand English. I have to admit, the little blurb by Bart did help a lot. Keep up the international film search! I want to see more from all around the place, particularly anything out of Asia would be great if there is much to be found.

  6. I on a 6 mb connection here but what is the purpose of Youtube, when you have to wait 20 second for one frame. Would like to watch it but not like that.

  7. Great job, Very impressive !
Good atmosphere and nice voices !

If someone else still want to prove if Blender is ready for great production movies...

Bon boulot les gars ! Continuez, on en redemande ! ;c)
    Félicitations !
