I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. I can't believe I just found out about this workshop now! I'm up in Baltimore, and the trip down to Richmond would be well worth it. Are they planning another Blender Basics Workshop in the future? I would really love to attend.

  2. Richmond, Virginia !?
hmmm.....perhaps some people who have more brains than I should do some risk-evaluation on the possibility/probability those powermongers from microsoft might attend the course and copy/steal the Blender3D-concept/paradigm so vista might get some actual 3D-functionalty to offer, as in 'more than just eye-candy' (I heard their 3D isn't OGL, but uses a lot of processor power instead of letting the GPU do all 3D, which is why you actually NEED 3GHz & 3GB to use the 3Ddesktop of vista, I got a PIII-800-512MB+GeForceMX-32MB which ran XGL(640x480 though))
Thank R.Stahlman for the GNU !
that licence might be able to protect us !
AND it lets the users deceide what functionality(&everything else!))which is what makes blender so great so perhaps theres nuttin to worry 'bout, if they rip of, it'll turn out **CRAP**, and Blender will remain a Beautiful flag on a pile of (micro-)shit !
come to think of it: what if blender menu's could rotate in 3D ! that would be awesome !
    Blender3D^2 !

  3. Gavin, I don't want to speak for Groo, but he did mention the possibility of having more workshops in the future, maybe in a couple of months having another one. He also mentioned the possibility of having a more advanced workshop(This was primarily to get you used to the basics of modeling and animation in blender and the interface of blender) as well. Though keep in mind I am not him so things can and do change;)

  4. Uh, qedqubit microsoft is centered in REDMOND not RICHMOND. Redmond is located in washington state; richmond is the capitol of Virginia. they're just about as far apart geographically as you can get in the contiguous united states. Just FYI.

Also i'm not sure, someone correct me if i'm wrong please, but isn't blender published under the GNU or similar liscence? Just because it's open source doesn't necessacarily make it easy for Microsoft to steal legally so hopefully your fears are unfounded.

  5. unfortunately I have too just learned of this workshop. I would have loved to attend! And am looking forward to another workshop as i do need to learn the basics. I am in Annapolis, MD

  6. Just a quick follow-up on this. The workshop this month had a bit smaller turnout than the one before, but I still had a great time teaching it. And it's really encouraging to see that there are other people interested in attending future workshops. Thomas was correct. We will be planning on offering another workshop sometime in April. We have not yet decided whether we'll be offering the Basics or if we'll cover more advanced topics (I'm inclined to do a two-day thing where we go over Basics on the first day and more advanced topics on the second... but all of that needs planning).

To those of you interested in attending future workshops, please send an email to [email protected] and I'll put you on our list of people to notify when we have more information.

  7. I would be interested in taking the blender workshop. Do you ever make it down to the Hampton Roads area? The local Unix users group (TWUUG) might be interested in hosting a workshop!

    Thanks,
    Brian
