Tutorial: Creating a vase in Blender

11

the-vase.jpgIf you're new to Blender and you would like a kickstart introduction to modeling, check out this tutorial by Gaurav Nawani.

Gaurav starts off by explaining some of the interface basics, then dives into mesh extrusion, adding materials and textures and finally setting up lighting and the camera. It has a nice slow pace and explains each step in detail.

This tutorial is not too recent, but it looks like all the operations are still valid. I think it's a great entry level tutorial that is accessible even for people with NO Blender knowledge at all.

The tutorial is available both on his website and as a PDF.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  4. Hey I really want to finish off my vase, i've got the modeling and lighting right, i just don't have the textures! Where can I get them? I downloaded the zipped file off the author's website (used the 'download now' link and clicked the picture, but both just have the .blend file! Please, how do i get the textures

  5. Here's how to get the textures from the .blend file:

    1. download the zip file as described above
    2. open the UV/Image editor (it's a window type)
    3. click on the icon that looks like an up arrow on top of a down arrow, directly to the left of an opened lock icon
    4. select a file from the list (there are 4)
    5. select "image" --> "save as"
    6. repeat until you have saved all images to your hard disk.
