Rigs! Rigs! Everywhere!

18

image1lf1.jpgNeed a good example of using Stretch IK in a rig? Or how about a simple rig like those seen from Animation Mentor? We've attempted to round up a collection of links to the available rigs out there and we even have a few new ones to show you.

Well like I said, we have a few new rigs for you to take a look at and experiment with. The first one is from Martin Georgiev. He shared a simple Stretch IK example and even provided the .blend on cgtalk. If you aren't a member of cgtalk you can download the rig from our mirror here. This one even has a nice walk cycle with stretch goodness included!
A note from Martin:

I forgot to delete the knee and ankle nulls.
In the beginning they were targets for stretch-to constraint but they don't work correct. I changed it with bones.

Lasphere has provide two Animation Mentor "look-a-likes" for Blender use. The rigs are a work-in-progress still, but are a good start. More info and downloads can be found at the Blenderartist thread.

*update 5/20/2007: Lasphere has informed us that he has been contacted by Animation Mentor, asking him to remove his rigs. He has of course done so, as no copyright violation of any kind was intended.

Along with those rigs the blender community has provided us with a collection of rigged characters that range from simple to complex including: Ludwig, Mancandy, Suzanne, Noodles , Cutebear, Simple Character, Squeek and Bunny.

*update: Craig (and the blenderartist thread.) All the elephant's dream rigs are available at the projects website. And a new rig Otto.

*update 3/09/2007: Mouse rig available.
If you know of any others, please let us know in comments and I'll add it to the list.

*update 4/11/2007: 3 Impressive rigs available (including actions)

note: As of this posting all links for downloading are working. Please let us know if any go down.

  1. I still have the rigged Billiard Ball that I used in the Blenderartist Animation Challenge #36 (Trick Shot) It uses empty's and hooks to control an armature for squash and stretch, another empty for an eye-focus, and plenty of expressive shape keys. (Also watch out for the shape keys to control pupil dilation the eyes!)

    Armature-less Rigging!

You can find it, for a limited time, by clicking the website link in this post:

  2. Just noticed, I've also packed it with materials for all 15 pool balls, as well as a slightly chalk-scuffed Q-Ball material. Enjoy!

Feel free to use it wherever you want, but please credit me if it happens to get into a piece of broadcast footage.

  3. did anyne ever make one that you can pull a few bones like an arm and just have the entire thing drag with it as far as you like ??

  4. It be nice to know about some good tutorials. I am trying to rig a model right now, but all I got it to do is move legs and arms, etc... but the mesh is "pinching".

  5. With all these free stuff like rigs, materials, textures and models around is it not time for a version of blender that comes packed with a lot of this stuff to make it more easy for newbies to get something good looking fast?

  6. Ohh how fun. I always enjoy animating rigs. Of course, I'd rather use someone else's since I don't want to go through the process of modeling and rigging. Thanks everyone!

Oh yeah, me and my friend recently posted a movie of ours on YouTube. We spent many weekends on it and finally came with a nice movie. I actually used Blender for the intro , but We haven't posted it yet. I'll try to get it on soon though! Just remember, the movie was compressed from 6 gigs to 97 megabites! So keep that in mind when adding a comment. !)

    Enjoy!

  7. hey don't forget proog and emo and quite a few swiss army ducks available on the ED dvd and in the ed production files, download links on the website. Proog and Emo's rigs are technically quite similar to mancandy.

  8. Hello all. Guess no-one new has been here for a while.
A few links have disintegrated over the years -

The mirror for Martin Georgiev's rig has gone.

Ludwig's home has moved but still has redirection in place.

    Simple Character has disappeared.

Also On'e links for the Calvin rig have gone too.
