alt_ligury has posted a really nice tutorial on how to do a realistic portrait. Not only is the tutorial made really well, but the result is amazing (see inset).
The tutorial is in French, however you can find an English babelfish translation here. It covers everything from taking reference pictures, modeling the face, getting textures made up, and even using hair particles to add that extra realism. Definitely worth checking out.

Great tutorial!
Isn't it creepy to live with a virtual alter ego?
very nice, thanks for sharing that with the community. great job
Very good tutorial. Someone who knows French and English should translate it, Babelfish translations are a little hard to understand.
Nice one gotta try this.
Now there is this thing I don't understand: Many times it is mentioned that Blender can't handle multi UV maps. It was even mentioned somewhere that it is on the to do list of Brecht. And on the other hand, you see this fine example, heck, there is even a tut on how to accomplish multi UV maps at Blender Wiki. Am I missing something here??
i think multi uv maps stands for different uv coord.... here he is using the uvmapping for all textures..
I might be wrong though :p
here he is using the "SAME" uvmapping for all textures :p (one word change it all hehe)
Nice!!!!!!!! Thanks for letting us know about this tutorial :D
Regards,
BS
Holy cow! Holy Cow! That final product on the tutorial is unbelievable! The whole process of it is genius! It's realy realistic.
Nice work alt_ligury!

have fun reading this :-D
@elcazze: Thank you very much!
Though I can make some sense out of the french text, this is _really_ helpful!
For my own, I enjoyed finding a good french tutorial !
It is not so usual.
Great tutorial, and really a great model.
The final result is amazing !
The final rendered image looks more real than him. For me that 3D work is very close to Final Fantasy: Spirit Within.
great texturing.
and the modeling is simple and very effective.
all is left that we can finally create skin like shaders.
the rendering looks too much like a plaster sculpture.
claas
The result is amazing. I wish i could get to the english translation but strangely enough i am not able opening any alta vista page. Is there any server care?? It looks pretty strange to me for nobody else mentioned such a problem. Hopefully i'll find a way for getting this tutorial. Can't get this rendered image out of my head. Really astonishing what is able with Blender and a well skilled artist of course
Bravad
WOW!!!!
Very nice... love the textures in the final result... Beautifully done.
Oh, btw, if the English translated version didn't work for you, here is another English translated version...

Maybe the link to cgtalk can be added to the article?
People, it's really senseless to post any google or babelfish translations
lol true.. true... just link cgtalk.. ;D
