I was pleasantly surprised by an email that I received from Shigeto Maeda. Those of you who have been around for a few years will remember him; Shigeto created the most wonderful art of organic and technical objects. He also produced the book 'Ka-ra: Shigeto Maeda's Blender Art Works' for Not a Number. He is now a teacher at Tokyo Kasei University and for this he has published a number of video tutorials.
Shigeto wrote:
I started new class of CG at university last week, of course I use Blender. And I'm making some movies of tutorial video for student's review and absence. The movies are 320*240 pics, so it's iPod video size. I put the movies on my new iPod/w/video, it's very small screen but I could see very clear. I think this way is very useful, if the students have new iPod.
Anyone who interested in the movies, see this. mov 01-04 are for 1st week, 05-09 are for this week. Now I'm making next week's movs.
You will find the tutorials here.
Even though the tutorials are in Japanese, you'll find them quite easy to follow: Shigeto has taken care to highlight the used hotkeys in the videos and if you listen well you'll hear many English words such as 'spacebar', 'cube' and 'extrude' ;-)

Great to hear from him! His Horus Project was/is always a great source of inspiration.
The CG classes certainly help Blender become more popular over there.
Cool! now i can practice my japanese AND watch blender tutorials at the same time in the bus! How cool is that :))
Arigatai to omoimasu! :D
BTW, is the Ka-ra book still available to purchase anywhere? I'd like to pick up a copy...
It seem that Shigeto Maeda is very popular:

Any mirrors around?

:(
Hmm, looks like the kind of "we are way cool, but we nevertheless want your money" stuff that I would expect from Apple.
@MagicMyshu: Maybe you should try to get Steven's Jobs. ;)
Looking forward to seeing the tutorials online again in the near future...
.mac ¬_¬
not even on this mac's are good for (sorry, it's just that I hate mac's)
Hi,
I'm very happy to hear you remember me. :)
Very sorry for the transfer restriction, I think it's due to .mac's server trouble. :(
So If you want to see the movies, I'll put them this page.

Thx.
@Joel: I don't think I hate Macs, I don't even know them, personally. Computers aren't bad, they're just... ... err... ...computers - they do what we want them to do for us.
It's just that all that "community" stuff (and that's what the "Mac people" are very proud of) doesn't work, if you want to make money with it - and that's where Apple's wrong.
@Shige:
_We_ are the ones that are happy to hear from you again.
I've seen your Ka-ra book in the blender shop some time ago (and have to admit that I didn't have the money to buy it at that time), but it was - and still is - great artwork. Too bad, that it isn't available anymore...:P
Best regards,
Ingo (quiss42).
This will be an excelent way for me to brush up on my Japanese! :D
Check out what I have hanging over my desk.. one of my souvenirs from Not a Number! :-)
I'm not able to see the link, but I would *really* like some good Japanese video tuts, so I hope I can see it soon.
Ah, got them! They look great. Thanks!
I got a reason for the trouble, it's a limit of data transfer of .mac. Now it's ok for 250GB/month, maybe you could see them. And I'll upload next movies in this week, vol.10-12. and continue to about 8 weeks or so. :)
Thx.
Shige, are you in Mixi? I have posted a link to your tutorials in the Blender community in Mixi. They look really terrific.
they're fantastic tutorials, very smooth and nice, very clear, and I don't know a word in japanese.
tx very much. I normally find videotutorials hard to follow but not theese.
Woot, Shige, your artwork is really impressive. Nice to know you're still around. I remember downloading those small Horus videos over my dial-up connection in Moscow.
