Tutorial: Modeling a Tennis Ball

15

tennis ball imageHave you ever wanted to animate Ludwig playing Tennis? Well the first thing you'd likely want to do is model a Tennis ball.

The tutorial to model the tennis ball is transcripted for blender from this maya tutorial. The idea came to reywillow after reading the first post in this thread.

reywillow does state:

Before we get started, I have to warn you that this is probably not the most optimized way to achieve this. I intended to make it the same way as the original tutorial, but under blender, not Maya. Also, I like the topology made this way.

No matter your opinion on the workflow this tutorial is a very good introduction into modeling in Blender and is easy to follow. Very clear instructions. Give it a go and post a link to your tennis ball.

See the tutorial post at blenderartists.org. The tutorial as well as other methods are also available at the Blender documentation wiki.

  1. Clever method, and well presented.

I'd love to see someone tackle the golf ball from a few different angles. Any takers?

not to be harsh, but this is a terrible way to model a tennis ball in my opinion. Use a sphere, and normal map the thing. All the perturbtions are "innies" and don't affect the edges, because of this, a normal map would provide 99.9% the same result as modeling the thing, would be far quicker to render, and would allow you the flexiblilty of image detail.

@ T-Ry: aaah... Use a sphere... Don't model it. Use the above technique. Gimp lets you make normal maps if you don't use windows or OSX.

  3. Of course it'S easier and time-saving to use bump-mapping, but I believe the idea behind this tutorial is to tech modelling, not texturing/uv-mapping.

You can fake _lots_ of things with bumpmaps, but this doesn't help one getting used to modelling in Blender.

But i also think adding another way to do it with bumpmap to the tutorial would be quite cool :) Care to create one?
