Video: Logo Design with Blender

8

logodesign-kopie.pngChris Stones has an interesting collection of videos on his blog. Many of them are funny or experimental, some are about video editing techniques and I found one in which he shows how he uses Blender in his workflow as an illustrator.

In this video he demonstrates the process of creating a 2D logo with Blender. By using a curve, a Bevel Object (BevOb) and flat shading he can set up a shape that is easily modified during the remainder of the design process.

I have included this one not only because it showcases a different kind of use for Blender, but also because I think that this video is an example of a well planned and executed video tutorial. Chris obviously spends a lot of attention on all the elements: video, voice and editing, and his work is a joy to watch.

If you're interested, he has a number of (non-Blender related) videos on his blog, http://welcometochrisworld.blogspot.com/

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Very good. I wish I was as articulate.
I had never really thought of using Blender 3d to make 2d.
The potential of Blender never ceases to amaze me.
Heres to the people that contribute their time and brainpower to make and share things for us to create with :o)

  2. That is inspirational, I like the idea of the amount of changing that can be easily made. From one item you can have a 2d any colour logo, a 3d textured render, or even an animation, all with consistency as its made from the same item! This has really set me thinking... Thanks!

  3. Excellent video! The brief shots of him thinking and working really add to it.
This was an excellent example something I need to remember: don't waste hours in blender making it perfect when you could just touch it up in Gimp.

  4. It was a complete surprise for me to wake up today and find myself on BlenderNation.
You can not know just how thrilled, surprised and honored to be mentioned here.
I mean, I never thought I'd actually be noticed by anyone. And all this time I've been
making videos thinking, "I've gotta do better next time" What comes out is always
miles shorter than what I had in mind. But this is all very encouraging for me to keep going.
    Thank you all.
