The Blender F1 Challenge Results are in. Curtis Smith, who has been organizing this yearly event for six years now, looks back at this year's competition.

The 2006 Blender F1 Challenge is complete and the votes have been counted. The top three Challengers are BullX, Deathblood and the team of Ecks and Mr_Bomb. All three entries are outstanding in quality but BullX really proved to the rest of the field that sometimes a simple, well-executed idea is what works best. BullX's image "to the competition" shows a little service robot taking the "F1-uni" racer to the starting grid. The excellent modeling, texturing, lighting and composition proved to be a big hit among voters as BullX won the competition by a large margin. The entry by Deathblood is an exciting image that shows very unique F1 cars in a very well modeled environment. The excitement of the image was enough to just edge out two-time F1 Challenge winner (2003 and 2004) Ecks who teamed up with Mr_Bomb this year to design a F1 that lives up to the standard that Ecks (formerly X-Warrior) established in his past wins.

This years competition had an increase in entries from the 2005 Challenge due in part to the change in the deadline but also due to the rising popularity of Blender. The F1 Challenge has always been a great venue for Blender users (both newbies and gurus) to try new things, learn more about Blender and provide a focus for an idea. Sometimes the most difficult thing about working in Blender is trying to think of something to create. The F1 Challenge provides the subject and the Blender user can use their imagination and get to work!
I get many questions regarding the Rules of the contest and why they are somewhat limiting. The idea behind the Challenge has always been about Blender and maximizing it's capabilities to create what our imagination sees. This years entries prove that idea.
I certainly look forward to hosting the Blender F1 Challenge in the years to come and I want to send a big THANK YOU to all F1 Challengers past and present!!
Ciao for now!

To be honest, this article has been waiting in my mailbox for some time now and I kind of had forgotten to publish it. I hope you'll enjoy it all the same ;-)

@mattie: we sneaked it in last week ;-) pretty posh eh?
yes :) I for one am very glad it works well in Opera too! ;)
Im very glad I can view it without it (as Tab).
I hate it. You got a fast Internet-Connection so you could load the
Pic in 1 Sec - but no: You are forced to watch 10 Minutes of Bling-Bling first >:-|
Anyway. Very nice pics there :D
The new image thing is nice. I'm glad I can click on the thumbnails at all. Perhaps add something so you can click the full image to close, or add another X at the top?
Back to the topic at hand... Yay F1 challenge! maybe next year I'll enter. No, probably not. Modeling's not my forte'. Oh well. Great entries this year!
nice image viewer you've got there!
@Bmud: excellent suggestion, I'll try to get that done.
Great stuff. I think I also agree with the ranks. (The ranking interface could be better (link to the images)).
That one with a lady on a turbo-bike is quite unsightly and inrorrect in its lighting concept.
daome o jogo
I got a question...just out of curiosity BullX has a text on the rubber of the tire stating "powered by idstudio" is idstudio another sort of graphical editing software?
One other question is the program that they used Blender or did it involve other programs to help b/c id love to eventually be able to do something like either one of the contestants...thanks for any responses
