Blender CAVE Development Sprint, Innsbruck

7

cave.jpgSamo Korosec [xype]is looking for ten Blender developers to come to Innsbruck, Austria during the last week of august and work on a CAVE version of Blender. All expenses are paid.

CAVE (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment) is an awesome virtual reality system: using stereoscopic projection on multiple walls and a head motion tracker it creates a stunning virtual reality experience. I once had the pleasure of getting a two-hour demonstration and frankly, some demos were so good they scared the crap out of me. Definitely worth playing with for a full week!

Samo writes:

The goal of the sprint is a pretty broad "CAVE must work with Blender". The main thing is that an elegant workflow is established for getting the 6 workstations used for the 6 CAVE projectors to work seamlessly with Blender data. So the content can be anything from a VJ environment to an architectural walkthrough or an ARToolKit installation.

The project is funded by the Zukunftszentrum, an Austrian state-funded organization that is specialising in topics regarding the future of work, the local area as a workplace and the changes in the working environment that will happen in the near to long term future. Lately they found an interest in Open Source and are looking for ways and ideas to integrate Open Source in the various processes in the industry.

Blender is interesting to them as it's both an animation and a realtime visualisation tool and right now they are testing the waters with some smaller projects to see what the response is and how one could support Open Source and get something in return. The people there have a lot of contacts in goverment and the industry, though, so we hope that we can get some more exposure for Blender that way.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. On school we have a Cave too, and my mentor has the same idea in his head, maybe i will next year work on it, but i've just started with blender so I must learn much more.

  2. Finally something happening in my town! That's the first open source project I heard of that has a meeting here! Unfortunately, I don't know that CAVE stuff, so I'll probably not come. :-(

  3. what do you want to do with the cave? run the blender game engine with it? isn't the game engine still in a bad shape or at least heavily in transition to bullet/ogre? maybe not the best timing for such a project?

or do you want to play some rendered 360° movies in the cave?

i live near innsbruck but i only can do some blender python scripting so i probably wouldn't be of much help. :)
