Chemical Structure Conversion Script

dna2.jpgMalte Reimold (intermalte) has developed a script that I have been hoping for for some time... the chemical structure conversion script pdb2blend!

Malte's site says it best:

Pdb2blend converts 3d structural molecular data in pdb file format to typical models such as Overlapping Spheres, Sticks or Sticks and Balls in the blender environment.

You might now be thrilled and are ready to start making some nice animations of chemisty in action. But where can you find pdb models to convert? Right here. Check out Malte's BlenderArtist thread for more info.

  1. I played with this a lot last night. Got a lot of the basic organic molecules I know to work. I had some issues getting some larger molecules like proteins to work (I'm talkin' 65 KDa here - NF-kappaB's p65 subunit to be exact if anyone else is interested in trying it). I'll try to mess with more settings though to see if I can get it to happen.

  2. With the metaball python api, it might be possible to
    do some surface representations of molecules too
    (e.g., I believe Connolly Surfaces are just glorified
    metaball structures). Unfortunately though, metaballs
    don't support different materials per element.
    (Might have to bribe Jiri for that one.)
