6

BlenderCE LogoA new version of the Blender PocketPC porting is available on the BlenderCE Blog, now modelling, texturing, lightning, rendering, animating, the raytracer and the radiosity solver are backed in, what's more load/save operations are finally possible.

The project mantainer wants also to make you all mobile-BlenderHeads know that now a dedicated bullettin board (aka forum) is now available, ready to host your comments/opinions/suggestions:

Don't hesitate to share with us your experiences with BlenderCE, the good ones (screenshots from artist using BlenderCE could replace my first basic ones!) but also the bad one (bugs that you find to fixe them).
I hope you will have lot of fun with this new version but please keep in mind that BlenderCE is still in a test stage.

Maybe it's time for my ol'n'good iPaq to come back to life ;-)

  1. I wish I had a pocket-computer.

This port of Blender is so sick, you've got to love it. Makes you wonder what kind of projects one could come up with on such a tiny device.

Kudos to the developers, this is amazing work.

  2. This will be great to "sketch" ideas for full-blown projects and show clients various ideas and concepts when you don't have complete computer facilities available.

  3. Makes me wish I didn't have a Palm Tungsten! (gues we can't port to one of those) :-(

Sorry we missed you at the ITEA Conference. I Tried to send an email back to you, but wouldn't go through. I had Bart's email and sent him a reply about the conference. If you would like to see what we did, go to http://www.blenderanimation.com for a summary. This is a site my collegue set up for our presentation.

  4. JimC I too have a Palm Device, even though BlenderCE is nice, but built for Windows Mobile, as a registared Palm OS Developer ;p its still a better solution then windows. Also the new TREO is being shipped with Windows Mobile, a bit sad, but I guess people like windows on their stuff.

But if your really wanting to put you Tung to some use for blender, slap on linux and give it a go :p. Probably won't be able to do much since you'll only have a mouse function, but you'll have a nice shiny overly huge Blender UI with a Splash screen.

If this project progresses I'd most likely switch to a pocketpc, better then lugging my laptop on the bus.

  5. Now you've got me interested Joseph! Are you saying that the linux version of Blender will operate on Palm or do I need to install linux on the Palm?

  6. Hallo guys,

I think if someone wants to make BlenderCE run on a pocketpc with linux, that should not be such a problem. Blender should compile fine (without stupid problems I had on WinCE) but to be usable, it should use OpenGL ES.

OpenGL ES is available for linux and you could use my wrapper to make Blender run. But some work will need to be done on Ghost (I can help people that wants to make it!)

I would be very happy if BlenderCE is not “Windows Mobile” specific but can run on all platforms. I tried to follow the same philosophy as the Blender source code to remain as general as possible, not including “Wince” specific stuff everywhere.

For more info about Linux on PocketPC, you can have a look here:

    See you,
    Salvatore
