General Hospital of Ciudad Real (Spain) Video

3

General Hospital of Ciudad Real (Spain) The General Hospital of Ciudad Real (Spain) has produced an impressive 5.5 minute video guide for their visitors. The video, which contains a wildly complex model of the hospital and its premises, is modeled, rendered and composited completely in Blender.

Carlos Gonzalez Morcillo, Technical Director of the project, writes:

The purpose of this project is the creation of a high-quality 3D video about the General Hospital of Ciudad Real (Spain) that serves as a global guide to their users.

The huge complexity of this building requires a high perspective in the visualization. The virtual 3D model can be used in other projects (as dynamic route generation, 3D plans, ...). This work, co-financied by various institutions, was totally made with Blender (even the video composition), under GNU/Linux.

The render was made with Ambient Occlusion. We used a modified version of Oscar (with Ganglia Cluster) to render the scenes... I can't remember the exact number of computers used in rendering, but at least, there were 60 Pentium IV with 1 GB RAM. The total render time (using this machines) was less than 1 week. The rendering process was made using the computers of the Escuela Superior de Informática (University of Castilla-La Mancha), using the technical support of Supercomputation Service of this institution.

The video is available in three formats:

On the project's website you'll also find a gallery with two high-resolution posters.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Very impressive from a modelling/blender point of view. Congratulations !

Unfortunately the building itself looks like a prison.

    LOL

Anyhow, good work, maybe some details are missing and some interior materials have too much specularity/reflectivity but it's still the biggest Architectural Project carried on using Blender so far.
